About James

Hello,
I am an Electrical Engineer at Duracell. I have two degrees from UCONN, one in Biomedical Engineering and one in Electrical Engineering. I had nearly straight A's in all my math courses. I love math and I have tutored some friends and family in the past and my mother has been a tutor for the past 20 years or more.

My general strategy would be to go through examples with the students. I would clearly state all the steps and explain them as I go. Then the student would do an example or two on their own to show how well they understand the concept. We would repeat the process until the student can complete multiple examples correctly on his/her own. I can also go through proofs of the theorems to give a better understanding of where the procedures and methods we use in mathematics come from. If my methods do not seem to be helping I can adapt to the situation. The student and I will do any homework for the class or classes that he/she is taking.

I grew up listening and watching the methods of my mother who has been tutoring for the past 20 years and teaching for over 30 years. Consider my mother as a resource I can pull in order to do a better job at teaching the student. I encourage a more laid back stress free environment when teaching. My background as an Engineer means I use math every single day of my life. I not only know the material, I have been tested on it hundreds of times. I improved a family friends calculus scores from failing to an A minus in only a few short sessions and I can do the same for you. I hope you consider me when finding a math tutor. Thank you for taking the time to read my profile.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have two degrees in Engineering. One in Biomedical engineering and one in Electrical Engineering. I use algebra, geometry, trig, calculus, and physics on a regular basis. I have taken college classes in these subjects and received high marks.

Algebra 2

I took honors algebra 2 in high school and received an A. As an engineering graduate I used algebra 2 along with many other levels of math on a daily basis. I also tutored a veteran math tutor in algebra 2.

Calculus

I have received an A in my highschool AP calculus classes and in my college calc 2 class. While I was working towards my two Bachelors in engineering I used calculus every day. I love math, and have tutored several people in the past all of whom saw at least a letter grade of improvement.

Differential Equations

I got an A- in my Differential Equations class in Sophomore year of College. I have been doing Differential Equations since my second BME course Freshman year of College. I continue to use differential equations in my class I am taking now. Differential Equations come incredibly easy to me. I use them in the majority of my Engineering courses.

Electrical Engineering

I have a bachelors degree in electrical engineering from the University of Connecticut.

Linear Algebra

I received an A in my Applied Linear Algebra class I took in the summer before my fourth year of college. I use linear algebra in many of my classes, mostly when using matrices in the coding language called MATLAB. I have been using linear algebra from day one in college and I continue to use it nearly every day in my Engineering courses.

Organic Chemistry

I took a Organic Chemistry class in the process of getting my Biomedical Engineering Degree. I received an A in the class. I only took the first term, but I loved the material.

Precalculus

I have two degrees in engineering. The math classes I have taken and excelled at are much farther along than pre-calculus.

Trigonometry

I took honors trigonometry in high school and received an A. In my college calculus and engineering courses I used trigonometry every day.
