About Caterina

Ciao! I was born in Italy and I am fluent in the language. On coming to the US, I received an Education degree in ITALIAN and ENGLISH (TESOL certification, pending). I have professional experience and enjoy teaching all aspects of each of the two languages, from grammar structures to literature. I implement all learning styles in my lessons, which are planned around the needs, strengths, and interests of each student.

It is important for me to motivate the student and help him or her to connect with the subject matter, whether it is English, Italian, or English as a Second Language. I have great love and passion for Italy, its language, and its culture. I have great respect and admiration for the English language and its impact worldwide. My sincere desire to teach motivates me to research and apply the most effective learning methods of pedagogy, including language learning and acquisition. These aspects are reflected in my lessons, depending on the subject matter.

It is these qualities that provide each student with the extra edge needed to be successful in mastering his/her goals. For more details on your subject of interest, click on TUTORING SUBJECTS, up above.

Hope to hear from you soon! A presto!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I currently assist students prepare for the WPE (Writing Proficiency Exam), which is based on a given piece of literature, its analysis, and how the information relates to the student. I offer assistance with general English and Literature classes, including comparative. I can help with reading, writing, and the grammatical aspects of English. No matter the age, I tailor the lessons according to the student's needs and strengths.

ESL/ESOL

I understand firsthand the needs--and fears--of those who are trying to learn English as a second language in the U.S. I have studied English and language acquisition (TESOL/ESL Certification, pending) and have 20 years of experience teaching language to adults, teens, and children, both in school and private settings. I am currently conducting one-on-one "American Conversation" lessons, which facilitate pronunciation and fluency.

Italian

I have found great joy and satisfaction teaching Italian effectively in the public school system and in private settings. I have taught high school, middle school and elementary school levels, as well as pre-K in a private daycare center. I truly enjoy the variety of teaching experiences this line of work offers.

Literature

Hello! I teach and assist students with reading and literature comprehension, from essays and short stories, to epics and young adult literature. I enjoy helping students grasp the concept of Dante's Inferno as much as I enjoy assisting them in exploring Robert Cormier's social issues.

Extremely Pleased — After only two weeks, I can already tell that Caterina is the type of tutor I needed in order to begin speaking Italian more fluently. Caterina places emphasis on actually speaking and thinking in Italian, and blending in the grammatical instruction when necessary. I wholeheartedly recommend her to those considering the study of Italian at any level. ...
