About Chris

I am an attorney by background, having spent the last 30 years working at the most sophisticated levels in the legal industry. In college I was an editor of the student newspaper and carried my interest in writing through to the legal profession. I have been reading and writing virtually every business day since, with significant experience editing the work of others. I have also written scripts for television shows and movies, and my musical about Liz Taylor had a successful run in the West Village a few years ago. That property was optioned by producers in Los Angeles for a movie project.

I was a college Honors History major, and have kept up with History through relentless reading of History books and keeping current on current events. History is my passion, and I know about as much about History and anyone this side of History professors. My training was not just in facts, but in different schools of Historical scholarship, so I am conversant in History beyond just reciting names and dates. I have mentored many young attorneys, and would now like to turn my attention to mentoring students.

I have been writing and editing sophisticated documents for over 30 years, and my writing skill set has been praised on many occasions. I believe my editing capabilities will in particular come in handy in tutoring others. I learned from my 11th grade teacher Mrs. Boyle, who deconstructed and reconstructed sentences, that writing is a learned craft. With the right teacher, anybody should be able to improve his or her writing.

I have been a passionate follower of History since a young age, and my Honors History college training taught me to look behind the names and dates for all the complexities of History. I can assist with the names and dates, but will also provide lessons on the themes and arc of History that will support recalling and understanding the meaning of names and dates.

I'll help turn your frustrations into your own passions. There is nothing like learning to express yourself in writing, and to impress others with your grasp of History.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I have extensive knowledge of American History, both through schooling and relentless reading. Topics I have particular knowledge of include the War of 1812, the Civil War, Reconstruction, Immigration, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the New Deal, and Cultural History, including the History of Rock 'n Roll. I will also bring a multitude of varied viewpoints on American History topics.

English

I have been writing and editing at the most sophisticated levels for over 35 years. My experience is broad as I have drafted legal documents, written television and movie scripts and edited many essays. My work has been praised on many occasions.

Geography

I have been studying maps since an early age, and have always excelled at Geography. I am familiar with both Contemporary Geography and Ancient Geography. As the world's Geography is updated on almost a yearly basis, I have kept up with those changes, and will continue to do so. We will know, for example, among other new developments, that South Sudan is now an independent country.

SAT Reading

I have been reading at sophisticated levels for many years, and have an outstanding vocabulary. I myself scored very high on the SAT Reading section (and was accepted into Ivy League schools). Our sessions will include memorizing vocabulary, but more importantly will explore the full meaning of sentences and paragraphs, making sense of them so you can too.

World History

I have extensive knowledge of World History, both through schooling and relentless reading. Topics I have particular knowledge of include the Stone Age, the Ancient Middle East, the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, 19th Century Europe, the Age of Exploration, the Age of Colonization, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, Contemporary World History, and Cultural History, including the History of Music. I will also bring a multitude of varied viewpoints on World History topics.
