My passion is unlocking student interest and potential in science & math, as well as promoting a well-rounded education. I'm a registered professional engineer, an active duty Naval Officer, but also a former full-time teacher of high school science. I've enjoyed success as a professional tutor over the past 5 years in several areas coast-to-coast, from developmental to the most competitive districts. I have also tutored undergraduate college students in physics and engineering courses.
Working with students from widely varied backgrounds and levels is my strength. While physics is my specialty, I'm also very comfortable tutoring algebra, geometry, pre-calc, trigonometry, writing, history, biology, or just study skills and organization. I can focus on one area in depth or spread my attention across multiple subjects.
You will find my communication style to be very personable, approachable, and upbeat. I am firm, fair, positive, and encouraging. I can tailor success strategies to many grades and skill levels. Tutoring sessions can be as regular or sporadic as needed, at whatever location works best.
Please consider me for facing a difficult subject, needing to catch up, or looking to gain a competitive advantage. I offer flexible, personalized, professional assistance. Looking forward to working with you and getting results! My passion is unlocking student interest and potential in science & math, as well as promoting a well-rounded education. Steve never missed a beat and I am sooooo grateful for his knowledge, care and patience.
Steve is a great tutor, he is patient, and places importance of the student doing a step above! My son was struggling in geometry before he started with Steve and he scored 100 on his last test, good job for the both of you!
If you are looking for someone kind and caring, who knows how to teach math, reading and writing. This is your guy.
My grandson said he learned more about biology in his time with Steven P. than a semester at school. He really connected with him, he hardly moved in the hour he was with with Steven, was never bored, great tutor for a 14 year old boy. Always replied to my e-mails and phone call, very gracious when my grandson got sick.
Steve very quickly worked out a way to keep my son more organized in his work. This alone has made a huge difference in all his classes. He is very prompt, kind and very good at his job. I would very much recommend him.
This is a Naval Academy grad, Masters from Rutgers, Naval officer heavily in charge of building the new hospital at Camp Pendleton tutoring my son and daughter.
Steve started with my Daughter for calculus. She got her A in AP Calc - and a 5 on the AP test. She's off to Notre Dame next year (and said no to the Ivy's).
Now Steve is working with my son. While my son is more of an academic challenge, Steve is a role model first and a great tutor too.
My only regret is a good review makes Steve less available for my kids.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Physics is my forte, and I take great pride in successfully teaching it to students who are confused, discouraged, or uninterested at first. Even for more adept students, I can help simplify and streamline the concepts, making them far more "digestible" and mentally accessible. I also ensure the student gets the most points available to him/her.
Much of my tutoring and teaching experience is in the area of general organization, motivation, and study skills. When I was a full-time science teacher at an inner city high school (Marist High School, Bayonne, NJ), I found that much of the extra help I would give students had to begin with getting them organized and to adopt successful study habits. By teaching the habits and practices that allowed me to succeed as an undergrad and graduate student, as well as a naval officer (since 2000), I found consistent improvements in my students.
In the Navy, I have completed several leadership courses (Basic Officer Leadership Training, Advanced Officer Leadership Training, Department Head Leadership, etc.) that emphasized time management and organization on both personal and organizational levels. These courses explored various methods, including those of Stephen Covey, Lean, and 6 Sigma. Additionally, the courses I took while getting my teaching license in the State of New Jersey also reinforced these concepts and more, including Multiple Intelligence Theory.
I have at least two current students that I tutor through WyzAnt with who I spend entire sessions on methods of organization, note-taking, and other study skills. It would be most accurate for me to submit such lessons under the subject of study skills.
The problem with today's language arts curricula is that not enough emphasis and practice is vested in the art and science of writing clearly and concisely. As an outsider to the Language Arts community, but one with extensive writing experience, I demystify the skill and quickly teach how to adopt effective structure, grammar, vocabulary, and syntax.
