I am an experienced tutor and certified Special Education teacher who has provided public school, Home-Bound (Ansonia, Seymour, state technical high schools), private, and agency educational tutoring for the past7 years to students in test preparation, gifted and talented, as well as those who have special needs.

With a Master's degree (3.95 GPA) I have had great success in assisting students to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in test-taking SSAT, PSAT, SAT, GRE, ASVAB, GED, achieving proficiency-goal in K-12 all subjects, assessment of special education needs to gain services within their school setting and/or entrance to private schools.

My students have received Academic Awards for greatest improvement; one made honor roll (9th grade); one scored in 95th percentile on SSAT; 3 previously failing seniors successfully graduated; a WyzAnt student earned an 'A' grade finishing an on-line class early after failing 2x; and many elementary/middle school students achieved proficiency in grade level skills of core subjects, particularly math, science, and reading.

My strengths include motivating and engaging lessons, utilizing strategic tutoring methods, and providing immediate feedback to students. I utilize research-based assessments of current skills and work toward achievement demonstrated through post assessments.

If you believe you could not possibly improve or achieve your academic goals or know that you can and just need the 1:1 time with a professional to do so, then I may be the best tutor for you!

I have been teaching students K-12th grades and am certified to teach in the State of Connecticut. This experience has often included helping young people who are reading, writing or understanding math with difficulties below their grade level. Or, in many cases, students who can understand most of the assignments but struggle with certain areas such as "I read it, but I don't get it", "I wrote it, but I have no idea what I wrote". I provide step-by-step plans and goals toward mastery and achievement along with strong study, organizational, and note taking strategies as needed. The successful attainment of a student's goals is when he/she is confident in understanding and maintaining his/her new skills in a variety of settings.

ADHD,

ADHD

My experience has included working with school IEP's (individual educational plans) with teachers and psychologists for students diagnosed with ADD, ADHD. In addition, have identified learning difficulties independently while tutoring students not previously diagnosed who had confirmed issues in this area based upon referrals and assessment by physicians. Doctors confirmed diagnosis and student(s) began receiving treatment. This understanding helped students become proficient in skill areas previously deficient. Finally, in taking Praxis II (CT teacher proficiency tests) in Special Education, I scored 191 out of 200. This Praxis exam has component in understanding background and teaching methods for students who are diagnosed with ADD/ADHD.

Special Needs,

Special Needs

Many of the students I have worked with in the past few years, while teaching and in tutoring, have had a variety of learning needs such as learning disabilities (dyslexia, ADHD, ADD); medical issues (injuries, chronic illnesses causing the student an inability to attend regular schools); mental and/or emotional health as well as behavioral difficulties. I work with each student individually helping him/her to set educational goals, supporting and coaching their efforts and success and 'not giving up on them' when they struggle through the tasks. I modify, yet keep the same educational goals and principles, when creating the lessons and work with all individuals who may be supportive of the student such as parents, school staff, legal and/or medical professionals. I successfully completed the state certification exit exam (Praxis II) in Special Education receiving a 191 out of 200. And, in particular, I have worked with (3) 12th grade students who were failing most or some of their classes who had special needs at the beginning of their final year. With hard work, patience and working with each student's strengths all 3 successfully graduated! Though their medical, mental, physical or emotional health issues may have still been of concern, the confidence each of them attained as a result of completing their high school diplomas was cause for my continued interest in helping more students for the future.

Wonderful tutor

Shannon is a wonderful tutor. She really cares about her students and their overall success. Shannon tutored my son in Geometry but she also helped him with organization skills, study skills, and challenged him to take responsibility for his school work. In three months time, she was able to reteach and reinforce geometry concepts that he did not understand or was weak on. His grade improved more than one whole letter grade between the 3rd and the 4th quarter. We highly recommend her.

The best of the best!

Through out my entire life math was just one of those things I never understood. In elementary school I had to be pulled out of class for extra one on one help, I would stay after school, in middle school it was the same thing countless hours still didn't understand anything about math. By the time I got to high school it seemed like a lost cause, I would go to class sit and listen to what the teacher had to say and pretend I understood what was going on. I had completely checked out and gave up just passing by the skin of my teeth. Two years after I graduated I decided to make it my mission to finally figure out what all this math stuff was about. When I first met Shannon she could immediately pick out my strengths and weaknesses, I managed to go through my entire math career without even knowing the basics. After just a few months with Shannon I can say with out hesitation I am 100 percent satisfied with all of the knowledge I have obtained, and now feel comfortable taking the entrance exam for the military. You're not going to find anyone as excellent as Shannon she wants you to succeed and will stop at nothing to make sure you do. Shes kind, patient, and always makes you feel like you are going to be successful. None of my math teachers could ever compare to Shannon she knows how to teach you what you need to know regardless of your skill level, again she is the best of the best!

Wonderful tutor!!!

Wonderful tutor! Shannon helped my daughter prepare for both the SAT and ACT reading and writing sections. She is very knowledgeable and is always prepared with a lot of practice tests and homework. During the sessions she kept the atmosphere energized and focused, with lots of encouragement and positive reinforcement. We can definitely see the improvement in my daughter test scores (she was in a top 10% on ACT) My daughter was a very nervous test-taker, and standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT were extremely nerve-racking for her. Shannon also helped with the test taking anxiety by doing the breathing exercise and self-affirmations out loud in the living room. This is correlation with practice helped to improve my daughter’s confidence about taking the test, and in my personal opinion, contributed greatly to the increase in her scores. Thank you Shannon!

Great for 9th Grade Honors Geometry

We found Shannon L. on WyzAnt using their search tool to narrow our search. She stood out as highly qualified, motivated, and well reviewed. We interviewed her and found in her a rare combination of high intellect and empathy for students who might need an extra hand. Our goal was to have our daughter work ahead over the summer to prepare her for fall and 9th Grade Honors Geometry. Shannon put my daughter at ease and calmed her anxiety. Then they went to work. Shannon came prepared with lesson plans and used the text from our high school to tailor lessons so that our daughter. Shannon provided homework and our daughter completed it eager to please her new mentor. After a series of lessons this summer our daughter went to camp with one less worry and had a great time. This weeks she started class with a teacher who is reputed to be cold, hard to understand, and extremely rigid. Tonight in the car on the way to a family friends house she sat in front and told me that she was confident that nothing they would throw at her would be too much to handle. I asked about Geometry and she said that over the past couple of days as the lessons unfolded and the teacher reviewed the year's curriculum she realized that she already knew most of the material thanks to Shannon. We will be engaging her services this fall to keep our daughter on track and to assist our younger daughter in 6th grade honors math. You will not be disappointed in Shannon. If your child has an ounce of motivation she will bring out the best in her and show her that A's and a good nights sleep are well within her grasp. Thanks Shannon!

Disappointed

When we first met with Shannon we told her we were looking for someone to tutor our son on an ongoing basis twice a week. She started in August but then found excuses not to tutor him in September. She misled us. We wasted our time and money.

Great tutor!

Shannon is an excellent teacher in every way. I went to Shannon for GRE tutoring for my wife recently, she made an exceptional improvement in her verbal skills. She has devoted a lot of time and energy for her, encouraged my wife a wonderful way. Besides her excellent teaching skills, she understands capability of a students and responds to the obstacles in every learner's mind. She is intelligent, patient, supportive, understanding and very much experienced. She always focused on the right points when she was teaching to my wife. She is a lovely person and I'm very happy to know her. I'm strongly recommending this tutor!!!

Excellent teacher

Shannon has been tutoring my son since July and he has learned so much! Shannon is very patient, enthusiastic and knows how to motivate my son to do well. My son has almost completed all of his summer packets. Now he is reading an assigned book. Reading has never his favorite subject but I have seen an improvement in his grammar and vocabulary in just a few weeks. We are very pleased. My son almost made the honor roll this quarter. Because of all of your hard work, he has shown tremendous improvement in his grades. Your dedication to teaching is wonderful to observe. On behalf of myself, his Dad, and our family we express our gratitude. And so we will continue with tutoring and it will be exciting to see what happens next. 11/16/12- Shannon is a wonderful, dedicated teacher. She never gives up on our son as it is an ongoing struggle to keep him motivated and focused. Her knowledge and persistence has helped enormously with his homework and the school system. Thank you, Shannon. Happy Thanksgiving.

Extremely Knowledgable!

Shannon was a wonderful help for me and my daughter. She was able to help tutor me in preparation for my GRE exam in a relatively short amount of time. Shannon was great and extremely patient with guiding me though Algabra 1 and 2 as well as Geometry. My daughter needed help reviewing for her SAT exam and Shannon came prepared with everything needed to arm her for success! We both learned a lot and appreciated all of her help. Shannon gets an A+ from both of us!
