I am a former New York City public school teacher. I will be teaching 6th grade in Connecticut starting this fall, 2015. I began teaching through the NYC Teaching Fellows program and received my Master's in Special Education from Long Island University in Brooklyn January 2013. I taught 6th and 7th grade Special Education at a middle school in Brooklyn for four years. This past year I returned to school full-time for my second Masters as a Literacy Specialist. I worked with the Teacher's College Reading and Writing Project and studied with Lucy Calkins and colleagues.
Prior to becoming a certified teacher, I worked as a private tutor as well as an intern at a summer reading program for students in grades K-5. I love my job and I am a committed, enthusiastic educator.
I am looking for a tutoring position for this summer into the following school year. I am most comfortable tutoring reading and writing, however I also have experience teaching/tutoring math up to 5th grade. My rate is $60/hr. I can be very flexible with my hours this summer however starting in September I will mostly be available to tutor on the weekends.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I earned my Master's in Special Education. My degree was conferred this past January 2013. I have been teaching students with special needs and, primarily, students with ADD/ADHD for the past three years. Both my course work as well as my direct experiences working with these students has allowed me to develop a greater understanding of how different children learn and helpful strategies to approach teaching.
I spent two summers during my college years working at a K-6 Reading Camp for students who needed to improve their reading levels/skills and comprehension. I was in charge of both assisting teachers as well as assessing some students individually. I also interned in a 1st grade class at an elementary school in my town. Finally, I taught as a 6th grade resource room teacher my first year of teaching in the city.
Throughout my college career, I learned public speaking skills, particularly in my history and film major courses, as we were required to give presentations and sometimes lead full class discussions. I learned skills in how to make eye contact with the audience, how to pause at certain points, and how to keep composure and track of time. As a teacher, I consider myself a "public speaker" on a daily basis.
As an individual who has completed education at a High School, College, and Graduate School level, I have had lots of experience studying for exams. Throughout my school years, I learned how to approach studying in different ways that worked for my learning style. I consider myself a very organized and disciplined person, and therefore feel that I would be able to successfully tutor students in this area.
