I am an enthusiastic educator and tutor with over 25 years of experience at the secondary school and college levels. As an SAT Essay scorer for the College Board, tutor liaison, and grammar teacher at Capital Community College, and as a former high school counselor and English teacher, I have thoroughly enjoyed facilitating students with diverse abilities and skills to become competent and often passionate writers. Our work is interactive and I often employ online sources, including PowerPoints I have created, Capital's Online Guide to Grammar and Writing, Purdue and the College Board sites to assist students with writing, grammar skills, study skills, preparation of resumes and cover letters and college essays.

My experience has been rich in that I have been able to teach and tutor students for whom English is their second language, adolescents, middle school and elementary school children and adults who are seeking to enhance their public speaking, English and/or essay skills. I continue to believe my greatest pleasure and satisfaction come from teaching and learning from my students. I see myself as an energetic, patient teacher and tutor who enjoys feedback from my students, adapts to their needs and enjoys the process of nurturing a student's growth and development. Also ,I was complimented when the Director of Advancement at Capital Community College employed me to assess and suggest modifications to the online site for grammar and writing. This experience enhanced my own appreciation and understanding of literature and of writing which I have enjoyed passing on to my students. Last, I believe I benefited enormously from the recent experience I have had of serving as a University Supervisor for the NEAG School of Education from the University of Connecticut. As a University Supervisor, I have been able to mentor, guide and evaluate student teachers who aspire to become instructors of English. This invaluable opportunity to coach and learn from the enthusiastic student teachers and their students has enric

Career Development,

Career Development

I have enjoyed counseling high school students and college students in vocational areas. Specifically, my work has encompassed assisting students with identifying skills, talents, interests and personal qualities and matching these with a variety of occupational options. Together, we have also worked on developing resumes and cover letters for temporary positions, internships and full-time positions. Last, but not least, I have enjoyed helping students become independent employers of software such as Career Cruising to continue their career exploration process.
Criminal Justice,

Criminal Justice

I believe I am qualified to tutor in the area of Criminal Justice based upon my occupational experience as a tutor of students pursuing this subject and my experience in this field. First, I have tutored students writing essays for criminal justice courses at Capital Community College since being employed at the college from 2008 through the present. Secondly, I have had a part-time position in Criminal Justice as a research analyst for a pre-employment firm, also from 2008 through the present. This position involves determining if a potential applicant has committed a crime or crimes, generating reports for employers and engaging in communication with and research with court personnel to compose an accurate, professional background check and report. These opportunities qualify me, I believe, and have generated my interest in tutoring students pursuing criminal justice courses and/or occupations. Thank you.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I have tutored students for several years at Capital Community College in this subject. More specifically, as they have brought me their Public Speaking assignments, I have helped them brainstorm ideas for notes and presentations, helped them develop supporting arguments for their thesis and topic sentences and helped them to edit their Public Speaking essays. I received education in Public Speaking when I earned my Master's Degree from Tufts University in Education and English and I have engaged in public speaking presentations myself with classrooms of students and parent audiences, particularly when I served as a high school counselor.

Proofreading

My Master's Degree in Education and in English as well as my Bachelor's Degree in English involved editing, revising and submitting many essays and research papers and included courses in expository writing, suited for becoming an editor/proofreader. My vocational experience has encompassed being an editor and proofreader for D.C. Heath and Company in which I researched and edited materials in the disciplines of history and art history while corresponding with textbook authors. For the last several years, I have edited essays, research papers and applications of undergraduates and college graduates, aspiring to attend institutions of higher learning and/or to assume positions in diverse fields. Colleagues have also sought my services as a proofreader to assist them in developing comprehensive essays for final exams and application essays to competitive colleges of higher education, such as Trinity College in Hartford. It has been most rewarding and satisfying for me to be a proofreader and I value the training and education I have had in using proofreading symbols and in learning the art of proofreading to edit texts and assist students and writers.

My Master's Degrees from Tufts University in English and Education and from Boston College in Counseling Psychology have given me practice and educational background in the ACT exam. Also, as a high school counselor, I have attended workshops presented by ACT representatives to learn how the ACT is scored and what the test consists of. Lastly and most importantly, I have very much enjoyed instructing students as an enrichment teacher at Farmington's Continuing Education Department, utilizing the ACT's English essay, discussing ways of improving, critiquing, and modifying sample ACT essays and other verbal portions of the exam.

I have greatly enjoyed teaching and tutoring English to students at diverse levels: middle school, high school and college. These areas of English include grammar, essay skills, reading comprehension and analysis of literature. In addition, I have been fortunate to have mentored and supervised student teachers of English as a University Supervisor for the University of Connecticut’s NEAG School of Education. These talented and motivated students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels enriched my life and always inspired me to my hone my skills as a teacher while assisting them. Last, I gained a wonderful background and experience in English while assisting the Director of Institutional Advancement at Capital Community college. He was kind enough to hire me to update and suggest revisions for the enhancement of Capital’s online “Guide to Grammar and Writing.” I found I gained much from the experience as “The Guide” is a rich resource of information on literature, writing and grammar. As a former graduate of Smith College with a Bachelor’s Degree in English and as a graduate of Tufts University with a Master’s Degree in the Teaching of English, I gained invaluable experience in teaching and in appreciating all aspects of English. Prior to teaching and tutoring in Connecticut, I engaged in teaching English, writing, reading and study skills in private and in public schools to students in grades six through twelve. I continue to be a student of English as well as a teacher and tutor and benefit from the many workshops on textual analysis, grammar, creative writing which I have attended at Capital Community College. It has been a source of great pleasure and satisfaction for me to prepare students in developing strategies for success with the Reading section of the SAT Tests. As a tutor and English and Reading teacher at the college and secondary levels, I have enjoyed utilizing my graduate work in English, reading and study skills to help students develop methods for identifying main ideas, inferences, and engaging in contextual analysis. My experience of teaching and the assorted workshops I have attended in enhancing reading comprehension skills have been of continued benefit to me as I have worked with students. The courses and workshops I attended over the past several years have been sponsored by the community college where I serve as a tutor and teacher of literature, reading, essay, grammar, study and social science skills and also by the College Board. In addition, for many years I scored standardized tests in reading, including the SAT Tests for the College Board, and believe this experience, along with the superior supervision I received, has enhanced my ability to serve students as they prepare for the SAT Reading section. In sum, I feel fortunate that my background has enabled me to provide assistance to students as they learn methods to be successful on the reading portions of the SAT Tests and as they embark on the pleasure and challenge of reading diverse types of literature and passages.
