About Alexander

Hi! I'm a lifelong student and teacher, currently working on finishing my PhD. dissertation in Government and Politics while also continuing my passion of teaching and tutoring. I started teaching math, writing, and social studies when I was in high school as a part-time activity to help out my peers, and since then teaching has become a major part of my life. While I always excelled as a student, I find it much more satisfying and meaningful to be engaged in discussions with other people, to help explain difficult concepts and work through complex material, and to generally be able to socialize with my students and peers. Helping my younger brother get through some tough years during his own high school and undergraduate education, I've come to have an appreciation for the struggles that even some very smart people have dealing with the stresses of overwork and the challenges of needing specialized attention in an over-booked classroom.

Critically, I have made a point throughout my teaching career of rejecting the haughtiness and hierarchy politics that are unfortunately common with some teachers and educators who cling too seriously to notions of authority and power. I always learned best from teachers I could relate to, who I could joke with, and who could speak to me with respect for my intelligence and a desire to see me develop as both a student and a human being. I have adopted this approach with my own students, and always endeavor to be their advocate and guide, never their taskmaster. I genuinely love teaching and learning, and I find that I do both best when I am given the opportunity to work one on one with new generations of students.

I scored in the 700s in both my SAT and GRE for all components on my first try in taking them, I have a very straightforward and intuitive understanding of math concepts and a long history of conveying both those concepts and numerous test-taking techniques and strategies that can maximize your chances at any skill level. I can help walk students through the mechanics of math which they don't understand, but just as critically, how to use mental math and optimal process of elimination to save you time you can use on the harder questions in a section. Across all parts of the SAT, I've worked with both gifted students and those with severe learning disabilities and achieved significant results.

My undergraduate double-major in History and Political Science both required and provided me with the opportunity to substantially improve my persuasive writing level as well as the chance to work with dozens of students as a writing tutor. My graduate studies, including my masters and my current work on the PhD, have all involved extensive writing and revision, and my work as a teaching assistant involved grading, editing, and helping improve hundreds of students papers at a college level. Prospective college applicants whose applications and college admissions essays I've worked with them to develop revise have gotten into a variety of competitive schools.

As you've seen, I have a long history of tutoring both SAT and GRE level math, reading, and writing, and my students have consistently improved over their initial results, some so much that college opportunities that seemed out of reach became a reality. I'm comfortable working both with teens and adults who are now looking into graduate opportunities, and can tailor our courses to whatever areas of the test you are struggling with the most.

History is one of my major passions. You could find me at 3 years old knee deep in dinosaur books, or naming each of their titanic skeletons as I waddled down the museum of natural history. I have since developed both a deep and broad interest in the subject, focused on European and U.S. History, as well as extensive study in Middle Eastern History, Religious History, and eventually as I moved to the current day - Political Science, Government, and Politics. These are the subjects I have my masters degree in, and which I continue to work on my PhD in today, and which I am always glad to teach and discuss in detail - all the way up to graduate level work.

I'm usually involved in a wide array of projects and interests given how many subjects I enjoy, which also means that I am capable of teaching and tutoring a wide array of subjects as well. If you need help in any of the aforementioned subjects I'd be more than happy to set up a time to meet in person or online. If its a subject a bit further a field but still in the vague ballpark of my interests message me anyway, I may be able to teach that too!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
