About Gabrielle

I have been an artist for as long I can remember. As a teenager, I began doing commissioned portraits (of families, pets and even homes). Then I painted room murals. Once I knew a career in art was possible, I decided to attend one of the best art colleges in the country, SCAD. There I became interested in illustrating children's books and the juvenile book market. All the while, I never stopped freelancing.

After college, I taught myself graphic design and worked at a few companies, learning and using Adobe Creative Suite to create logos, brochures, magazine layouts, etc. In 2008, I became a mother and started my own business so those things took priority for a few years. I illustrated a few children's books during that time using digital tools but I began to miss painting and getting my hands dirty. So earlier this year, I began to teach painting classes a local painting studio. This has ignited my desire to continue to help others and share the joy of creating and expressing through art.

My formal training in color theory, perspective and Art History make a great foundation for my art. Being a mom gives me patience when teaching someone that may not know as much as I do. I love to paint in watercolor and acrylic paints. I love to sketch and then manipulate those drawings in digital programs like Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.

I have lots experience in photo manipulation ("Photoshopping") to remove unwanted elements, color correct, add in backgrounds or objects, etc. I love to paint in bright colors! I have illustrated 2 books for independent writers planning to self publish. I still dream of publishing my own children's book one day soon.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I have taken many hours of figure drawing with a live model and still life drawing classes in college. I always sketch my children's book illustrations before making digital versions of them. I have always kept a sketch book for documenting my ideas. I graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design with a 3.9 GPA in 2002.

Graphic Design

I am a freelance graphic designer and I have created logos, advertisements, and other marketing materials that incorporate typography and images. I was the Print Production Manager for a international furniture company for 2.5 years. I understand the print process and how to alter images for optimum digital use. I am an expert user of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

Painting

I have been painting commissioned murals and portraits for almost 20 years. I have completed the illustrations for 2 children's books that will be self published by the authors. I am currently an instructor where we teach children and adults in step by step instructions to paint an acrylic 16"x 20" painting in a 2 hour class. The job requires being able to look at the demo and teach the class without having painted the painting before. It takes an experienced artist to look at a finished painting and be able to break in into steps for inexperienced painters. I really enjoy the challenge!
