About SUSAN

I have lived, studied and worked abroad throughout my life, and have taught students and business professionals alike from the EU, China, Japan, Korea, South America, Eastern Europe, the UE and Russia. Having learned second languages and adapted to other cultures myself, I have a first-hand understanding of what it's like. It's my privilege to support you through the challenges... and onto the rewards!

I work with multinational students and their families via Yale University's Office of International Students and Scholars, with multinational business professionals located here and abroad, and with younger learners, K-12. Recently, I returned from 2 months abroad during which time I taught beginner and intermediate English classes at St. Giles College in Brighton, England.

I am available for English conversation, cultural acclimation and grammar support, test, interview and presentation preparation, reading, writing and editing, and overall assistance with speech and fluency. I have 20 years of experience supporting multinationals the world over and am happy to custom-tailor my skills to facilitate your specific needs and goals.

I have a BA in Social Psychology from Bennington College and my ESL Certification from Cambridge University (CELTA - Certificate of English Language Teaching, St. Giles Brighton, UK).

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have so we can see how I can best help you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am CELTA-certified to teach English to adults and children and have done so for the last 20 years of my career. I've worked in classrooms and one-on-one with students of all ages -- and with professionals in all fields, world-wide.

ESL/ESOL

BA in Social Science from Bennington College
CELTA (Cambridge University Certificate of English Language Teaching)

Grammar

As a CELTA-certified teacher, I am qualified to teach English Grammar to adults as well as to young learners. I have taught grammar both here in the US and abroad in the EU.

Proofreading

I've worked as a professional proofreader and copyeditor for 15+ years both here in the U.S. and for ESL professionals abroad. I currently prepare manuscripts for publication for both native and ESL authors. I have worked as a proofreader and editor at Bottom Line Books and Olivetti International as well as for clients at Radio France International, Arte Film EU, Yale University and NYU School of Medicine.

Public Speaking

I have assisted students grades 4-12 (Castelli International School, Rome, Italy and as a private coach both here in the tri-state region and abroad), academics (Florence University, Yale University) and business professionals (EU journalists and media professionals from Radio France International and ARTE TV) with presentations, broadcasts and speeches, as well as preparing Yale's post-doc students with interview and presentation practice (and their families with conversation support) via Yale University's OISS (Office of International Students and Scholars).

Writing

I have assisted business professionals, academics and university and K-12 students the world over with their writing needs. In addition to currently working with Yale students in preparing their academic papers, I have assisted multinational writers with the successful submission of their manuscripts for publication, aided in the preparation of online written content, and supported clients' scholarly and business writing skills in the U.S., England, France and Italy.
