About Dave

Hi! I've been tutoring since 2003, and, in 2010, I switched completely to online tutoring. I use Skype for my sessions, because most students are familiar with it and because it's cross-platform. Mac users can use the Messages application as well.

I graduated from Dartmouth College in 1998 with a bachelor's degree in Physics Modified w/ Education. I followed that up with an M.A.T. (master's of arts in teaching - physics) from Vanderbilt University in 2000. I tutor all high school math courses from algebra to calculus as well as chemistry and physics. I can also do college courses depending on the material. I have lots of experience with the math and science components of the ACTs and SATs as well, including the math-related subject tests.

I know what it's like to not understand how to solve homework problems and test questions, especially in the higher-level subjects like Physics and Calc: I didn't have adequate teachers in those subjects during high school, and that put me at a large disadvantage in college. It was only after I started tutoring that I started understanding why certain methods were used in certain problems, because, not only did I have to teach myself how to do certain problems that no one had properly told me, I also had to be comfortable enough with the solution process that I could teach others the steps in a way that made sense.

When you're a student, you don't really have the time to understand *why* you're solving problems the way you've been told to in class--you just do it that way so that you can get the homework correct, and then study the homework questions later to prep for a test. Oftentimes, classroom teachers can't explain the reasoning behind methods and equation steps, because either they don't have enough time to analyze every step and make sure every student understands them or they just don't *know* the reasoning. And that's why tutors can be a big help.

Although meeting once or twice each week is generally the best course of action, I can also do here-and-there sessions for tests or difficult homework. Because I tutor online, my schedule is more flexible than most, and students have often texted/email me from school to ask if I can meet with them later that day. Feel free to drop me a line if you have a question that hasn't been answered here

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
