About Ken

I graduated from UConn in 1976, and worked for over 20 years as an engineer in the Hartford and Boston areas. A life-long learner, I think learning should be fun, if not an adventure, and am not tied down to any one way to do so, or any one particular subject. Understanding and a sense of curiosity is far more important than a litany of rules or facts. Personal interaction and real-world application certainly also has its place.

My background is in Physics, Math and some Chemistry, but I have worked with everything from lasers, high explosives, fiber optics, communication systems, database applications, and in such fields as mining, customer service, a museum, a computer store, the Air Force, the FAA, and for myself as an owner-operator. For work I have traveled around a bit of the US, in France and Belgium, and Saudi Arabia. I've also taken college-levels courses for fun, in Egyptian Art History, and Japanese History, and am particularly fond of Oriental art.

I'm more than willing to teach anyone who has a general interest in understanding how the world works, and will work with that person so they can develop their own learning style they are comfortable with.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Microsoft Windows

As I use both Word and Excel extensively, and have passed both tests, I am quite familiar with Windows. Also have used Access and Project. In trouble shooting all these applications, one often has to go into the directories, use the search functions, etc. etc.
