About Barry

For the past 15 years I have been teaching private music lessons all over Fairfield county. Now, having earned a masters in primary education from the University of Bridgeport, it's time to expand! I am very familiar with the most up to date methods based on the common core, and I have an easy rapport with students that often sparks a true love of learning.

In my years of private instruction I have learned to quickly assess the students strengths and weaknesses and teach with an ear toward the individual. Every student learns differently, and it is crucial to speak to their personal learning styles. My teacher education at UB has prepared me with the most up to date techniques and standards, and my constant review of what is new in the world of education keeps me there.

My personal challenges and breakthroughs with math make me uniquely qualified to explain difficult concepts with easy and fun methods. I've found many students have difficulty in math due to an inability to visualize the concepts. By using techniques that allow the student to understand not just the solution to the problems but why those solutions work mean that the same techniques can be used to solve ever harder problems. I've found this works with students from kindergarten all the way to college.

Reading and writing have been a passion of mine since I was very young. I have a deep love of the English language and an innate ability to understand and communicate how to infer ideas in texts and get to the deeper meaning behind literature at all levels. On the beginner level, I am very good at teaching how to stretch and break up words to learn how phonemes work for grades k-3. I have been writing all kinds of text from nonfiction to essays to children's books and am familiar with a number of techniques to inspire a lifelong love of reading and writing.

My strongest asset is my rapport with children. I have had students come in unwillingly to approach subjects they didn't like only to have them leave with a passion for the subject. Every child comes in with their own interests and ideas, and by using that as a baseline they can be used as a jumping off point to truly understand and love any subject they put their mind to.

As a professional music teacher, composer, and for over 15 years I have a deep understanding of both music theory and instrumental technique for guitar, piano, drums, bass and flute. I apply my knowledge to the music the student is interested in and use that to inspire a passion for the mechanics of music.

I am passionate and knowledgeable not just about particular subjects, but about learning in general, and it is my goal to inspire that passion in my students. My years of teaching have given me the techniques to do so, and I am looking forward to working with many new students through Wyzant. Flexible scheduling and willingness to travel are an added bonus. Hope to talk to you soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a masters degree in primary education from the University of Bridgeport and am receiving my certification in August. I have interned at a school grades K-3 and have substitute taught K-8.
