About John

Most recently, I've worked at Riverfield School in Fairfield, CT as a substitute teacher and special education paraprofessional. Previously, I traveled to China in 2011 and worked as an English and test prep tutor for two years. I taught students from K-12 as well as college students. Both experiences have given me perspective on students from different backgrounds.

I have experience with the ESL requirements for universities (TOEFL/IELTS) as well as the SAT and AP US History exams. Some of my students from China went on to attend colleges such as Colby College, University of Washington, Purdue, and UCSD. I have passed the HSK 4 which is a Chinese proficiency exam for foreign speakers. If you are looking to start learning Chinese or move up to the intermediate level I can teach you.

Thank you for considering me and I hope we can start learning together soon.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chinese

I studied Mandarin Chinese for four years at the University of Arizona. I spent one year abroad in Nanjing, China. After graduation I lived in China for two more years, practicing Mandarin and working in an office. I also passed the HSK 4 which is a Chinese proficiency test.

Elementary (K-6th)

I spent the last two years teaching 4-13 year olds in China. We covered science experiments, US history, and English. I would divide our class time into review, introduction of new concepts, practice, and finally games/activities to bring it all together. A copy of my lesson plan would be given to the parents at the start of the class. If there were reading/research materials, they would be handed out a week in advance. Classes consisted of 2-8 children and typically lasted 90 minutes.

ESL/ESOL

While living in China for two years, I taught many students from pre-K to adulthood. We covered grammar, syntax, and vocabulary in each lesson. I put a lot of emphasis on making each student comfortable with using English in every day situations. I possess an TEFL certificate and speak Mandarin as well as English.
