University of New England (History)
Mercy College (Master's)
As a teacher in a local high school for the past 10 years, an instructor at another high school's summer program for 3 years, and as an independent tutor, I've met and worked with a wide array of student personalities and ability levels. For each of my 10 years teaching in Putnam County NY, I have added new classes to the ones I've already taught. So far the list of subjects I've taught include (US history regents, Global I and II regents, AP World History, AP US History, Economics, Participation in government, Military History I and II, 1980's through film, Theater Tech, Public Speaking, SAT Prep in English, and Latin American History)
A specialist in Global I and II as well as the NYS regents exams (which I have assisted in grading for 10 years) I have helped many students that initially failed these exams to succeed in a subsequent retake. I have also taught AP World history for the past 10 years, and know the AP exam exceptionally well. I've made a lot of my own materials for students to review. I post notes and review materials online for all my classes, enjoy employing games into my teaching and even had a chance to design my own curriculum for a military history course which I've implemented over the course of 5 years. I was named teacher of the year in 2014 at the high school I teach.
I run multiple after-school activities for students; Model United Nations (a world diplomacy simulation) in which I've taken students to Columbia University in NYC. I also chaperoned a local high school's most recent trip to China, where we visited Beijing and Shanghai and our sister schools there. I have been a technical coordinator for theater as well, building sets for a variety of productions. Working with a crew of over 40 and a cast of 100 can be an education in cooperation and coordination.
For the students and families that come to me for help, I am flexible, patient, and adaptable. I look forward to an opportunity to work with you! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Over the course of 3 summers, I taught a course in public speaking for gifted NYC students visiting Horace Greeley HS in Chappaqua, NY. I have also spend time on stage acting and singing, and have given a wide variety of public speeches. I feel I am qualified to teach this subject.
I have graded the January, August, and June administrations of the NYS regents in Global History as well as the US history test since the Fall of 2006. With a population of 1200, I grade roughly 300 tests per subject, per summer, and around 50 per alternate administration.
I have helped to crew, direct, or organize the following shows at the high school or college level: I Love You, You're Perfect Now Change; Beauty and the Beast; Guys and Dolls; Oklahoma; Once Upon a Mattress; Macbeth Did It; 12th Night; A Midsummer Night's Dream; Grease; and many more.
I have attended 4 AP World History Conferences in the past 7 years, and helped to create our current curriculum at the high school. I am also the adviser and founder of the Model United Nations club at our high school. It is a growing club with 52 students that specializes in international relations. For the duration of my career so far, I have taught either Global 1 or Global 2 (freshmen and sophomore courses).
