I am an experienced educator with over 10 years combined in NYC and Connecticut. I have spent my entire career teaching and helping kids in many different grade levels and academic levels, from children with IEP's to children who are "Gifted and Talented".
I know that my time with children is short compared to many things they have going on in their lives, but my focus is to make that time as valuable and memorable as possible. With 2 children of my own, I know the value of having an educator who cares as much about your kids as you do. Benjamin Franklin once said, "An investment in education always pays the highest interest." I am an experienced educator with over 10 years combined in NYC and Connecticut. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a New York State and Connecticut State Certified teacher for elementary education grades k-6, passing all necessary exams and obtaining all necessary experience with 12 years of continuous teaching.
My B.A. at the State University of New York College at Oswego was in Elementary Education with a concentration in Math. I started my career in teaching as a math teacher for 4 years and continued to teach math throughout my career as a homeroom teacher of self contained classrooms. I feel I have a very strong math base, especially for children. I am knowledgeable in both traditional math strategies as well as the more recent strategies that parents "can't understand". I know that I can be a real asset to your child's mathematical success.
Although I have taught Elementary Science for over 6 years, half of that time was dedicated to teaching science specifically as a content area. With the new Common Core Standards in place, science is now considered part of literacy and math. Reading non-fiction, science content is a must in these new standards. I know how to bridge that gap between reading that non-fiction content and keeping it hands on and fun.
As both a teacher and a parent, I have found it necessary to be knowledgeable in phonics and being able to teach phonics in such a way that it leads to becoming a successful reader. My teaching experience has allowed me to work with many different students on many different levels in this area so that I now know how to work with students when they meet difficulties in order for them to achieve success.
My 12 years of teaching experience are all inclusive of grades that have required a state exam. I have had to teach students and parents techniques to study and share testing strategies that will allow for students to be successful on any exam.
