About Kathleen

Hi everyone,

My name is Kathleen and I am a teacher of Mathematics in Connecticut. I am a recent graduate at Central Connecticut State University with a degree in Mathematics Secondary Education ending with a 3.7 GPA. I am excited to be tutoring on Wyzant to get to do more of what I love. I have tutored regularly for 8 years for students from the age of 4 to 45. My experience lies mostly in Mathematics but I have had experience tutoring bits of Science, English, and History as well. I also have a great fondness for Shakespeare and love helping others learn to appreciate his work.

As someone new to the professional field of education, I am very versed in the new standards of teaching in our state and have been well practiced in teaching styles that aim to reach the most amount of students. Not all people are the same and not all people learn the same, so it is important to be able to differentiate instruction and find ways to reach out to those that benefit with different methods of teaching. One of the reasons I love tutoring is because you have that opportunity with one-on-one instruction to determine what teaching style is best for that particular student so you can really make the most out of your time with them and help them reach their goals.

I have loved math as far back into my schooling as I could remember, and I loved teaching it even more. Specifically, in 3rd grade I remember rushing to finish my worksheets because when I did my teacher would let me walk around the room and help other students who were struggling. I find math to have a love-hate relationship with most people, that being they either love it or hate it with very little middle ground. This is really a shame in my eyes because I see math as such a beautiful subject with so much value in our world. It is my goal as a math educator to help others understand the subject so they can appreciate it too.

I really do have a passion for teaching and am excited to share my joy with my students. Let's have a great school year!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have always had a pull towards Algebra. I find that a great deal of trouble for students trying to excel in Algebra is a lack of understanding in what is going on behind the numbers. I like to help students understand the processes they are learning so when they get to the numbers it can make sense.

Aspergers

I have been a private tutor for a CCSU student with Aspergers for two years now. I began helping him in Math at the request of his mother. This consisted primarily of refreshing material that had not been covered at his pace through public schooling, as well as assistance in his college Math courses. It has been very rewarding for me in challenging me to find ways I can explain the material to find what suits him best. I am pleased to say that he is doing exceptionally well and has even picked up a minor in Mathematics.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored elementary school students for 7 years. I did work with all of their subjects including Math, Science, Reading, Writing, and History. I particularly enjoy working with younger students because they have a willingness to learn that is very refreshing. I find that more often than not I am learning just as much from them as they are from me.

Linear Algebra

I took Linear Algebra in college and have tutored many other students in the subject since. I am familiar with working both on paper and using a graphing calculator to solve matrices. Knowing that everyone learns differently, I have practiced differentiation in my tutoring to be sure that I help each student to the best of my ability.

Public Speaking

As a performer in theatre I have always found it comfortable to speak in front of crowds. However, I know this is not the case for everyone. I have taken college public speaking courses and helped my classmates with them. I think public speaking is an important skill in today's world and like helping others feel comfortable with it.
