About Tori

I am a certified tutor. I have been tutoring for 8 years. I have tutored students with English, reading, and math courses. I love to help people with reading fluency and comprehension, and with writing and grammar. I also enjoy helping people with various levels of math. I have taken honors and AP math courses through AP Statistics. I have experience tutoring elementary school students in reading and writing. I use books they bring home from school, the applications they use in the classroom, as well as games to help the student learn in a fun way! Throughout high school and college, I have also tutored students who have come to me asking for help with math, English, and occasionally psychology.

I love to tutor and help people understand topics and ideas that they have been struggling with. I have learned that everybody learns differently, and oftentimes the student just needs someone to explain a topic in a different way that is tailored to how they learn best. I look forward to that "aha" moment, when the material suddenly clicks!

I assisted a Pre-Algebra teacher with his students. I graded papers and answered students questions. I also sat down one-on-one with students who were struggling to help them understand the topics and get caught up. I am very patient and work at the student's pace.

I have experience tutoring elementary school students in reading, reading fluency and comprehension, and writing. I was also the editor of my high school literary magazine, which required me to both solicit material from students, as well as to proofread and edit student work to prepare it for publication. I have also proofread fellow students' essays.

I can travel to students or meet online. Please contact me for more details.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you with your studies!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary Math

I have experience tutoring students in math. I have tutored students of all grades in various levels of math. I have assisted elementary students with basic math. I answered any questions they had on math worksheets they were doing. We would talk through any questions they had, and I would encourage the student to both tell me why they solved a problem in the way they did as well as what they think they could do to tackle a problem.

English

I am a writing major and a certified editor/copy editor.
I have years of experience tutoring students of all ages in English. I have tutored young elementary school students on writing, grammar, reading, and speaking English. I have also tutored middle school, high school, and college students in various aspects of English, such as proofreading, essay writing, creative writing, grammar, and more.

Proofreading

I am a certified editor/copy editor and a member of the American Copy Editors Society. I have 5+ years of experience proofreading and editing various types of writing.
I was also the editor of my high school literary magazine. My job was not only to solicit material from students, but also to proofread and edit each piece that was submitted. I would often sit down one-on-one with the students to discuss edits. I also have experience proofreading essays for fellow students and discussing the reasons for those edits.

Reading

I have experience tutoring elementary students in reading, reading comprehension and fluency, writing and grammar.
When I tutor students of a younger grade level in reading, I use both the books they bring home from school, as well as educational games to make the tutoring fun. I often use card games where the student makes words or sentences; I have also played the memory match pairs card game with students -- for this game I will print out words I know they are struggling with, as well as some sight words, and will use those words for the game. I will continue to switch out the words in the game based on the words they struggle reading. My students have told me they have a lot of fun with these games!

When tutoring older students in reading, I will use the books or materials they are struggling with in school and work with them on whatever they are struggling with. I work at the student's pace and am very patient. I will also try to make it fun for an older student by using texts related to subjects they enjoy, and talking to them about how they learn best and what they find most fun.

My students and I will go over the pieces they are struggling with as many times as is necessary until they show an understanding of the material, and until they are comfortable with moving on.

Spelling

My main qualifications with regard to tutoring spelling are my experiences in proofreading essays and editing students' pieces of writing. I also have experience helping the students I tutored in reading/writing with their spelling and understanding why certain words may be spelled in that particular way, as well as why the word may not be spelled the way it sounds phonetically.

Writing

I am a writing major in college. I am also a certified editor and a member of the American Copy Editors Society. I have experience tutoring students from elementary school through college and adult in writing. I have tutored younger elementary school students on basic sentence structure and writing, as well as the parts of speech. I have also gone over older student's papers with them and discussed what both they and I felt could be made stronger.
I was also the editor of my high school literary magazine. This experience exposed me to various types of writing.

In college, I have taken many writing workshop classes; in these classes, we read work from each student and give constructive criticism and suggestions. During these classes, I also learned techniques for writing poetry, fiction, and nonfiction.

During my psychology courses, I learned how to write literature review papers, read and understand clinical studies, and use proper citations.
