Love for learning can be contagious, as I have discovered in sharing my personal enthusiasm for academic endeavors through a rewarding career as an educator. A summa cum laude graduate from college, with a Master's in Education and a Ph.D. in English, I have spent a lifetime showing students how they can maximize their potential in meeting their long-term educational and career goals. My teaching approach is consistently supportive and encouraging, always emphasizing what a student is already doing well, and then helping him or her to improve further in order to take it to the next level.
I specialize in teaching effective writing skills, as well as developing critical thinking skills and improving reading comprehension, along with in-depth analysis and interpretation of literature. I assist students in achieving success both in school and in performing well on all forms of standardized testing.
I am happy to travel to meet with students at locations that are convenient for them; there is also a quiet place in my home for one-on-one instruction. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have several years experience teaching developmental reading on both the high school and community college level. Working with ninth graders who were reading at the first grade level, I developed an instructional program that resulted in an average growth of 3-4 four grade levels in one academic year, using Gates-McGinty as a pre-test and post-test measure of achievement. This method consists in out loud decoding practice by students along with guided practice by the instructor.
I have taught phonics in reading classes from K-6, as well as in grades 5-8. Phonics are also a key part of the developmental reading courses I have taught on the high school level. I provide phonics instruction on a regular basis as part of my job teaching developmental reading on the community college level.
I taught a Praxis I Preparation course at Northampton Community College in Bethlehem, PA from 2004-2006; the majority of my students went on to successfully pass the test. I also taught an Praxis II English Preparation course at DeSales University in Easton, PA from 2005-2007; 90% of my students went on to successfully pass the Praxis II English Test.
I am Connecticut and Pennsylvania certified in English 7-12. I have an Masters in Education and a Ph.D. in English. I have 15 years of secondary education experience and ten years of college teaching experience.
