Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified K-6 in the state of Connecticut. My experience is in teaching English (writing) and Reading. I have also taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math as a long-term substitute.

Elementary Math

Use of manipulatives and practice contribute to student success in elementary math.

Grammar

Activities, games, and practice aid students in the mastery of grammar. Pieces of writing written about topics of the student's choice, hold their interest and allow them to practice real life applications for the correct use of the parts of speech, correct sentence structure and variety, proper spelling, and accurate punctuation.

Microsoft PowerPoint

Understanding and practicing the use of PowerPoint enhances the communication of what students have learned. Practice and mastery of this software prepares students for the multitude of opportunities they will encounter as they progress through school.

Microsoft Word

Understanding and practicing the use of Word enhances the communication of what students have learned. Practice and mastery of this software prepares students for the multitude of opportunities they will encounter as they progress through school.

Prealgebra

Manipulatives and practice will bring students success as they work on the more abstract concepts of math.

Reading

Fluency and comprehension in reading are paramount to the success of students in any subject matter. Time to read and comprehend text includes strategies in decoding, fluency, and comprehension through the use of teacher chosen and student selected text.

Spelling

Spelling strategies are taught to help students succeed in spelling. In addition, resources for correct spelling are introduced and utilized to broaden student options in proficient spelling.

Study Skills

The ability to learn how to study is extremely important. Determining which material is key versus which material is extraneous is a skill that needs to be taught and practiced. Note taking strategies, memorization tricks, and rote practice can all be mastered to create confidence while studying.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary focus is one of the prime areas in reading curricula. Root word recognition and frequent exposure to a variety of texts aid in building student vocabulary.
