My name is Christopher W., and I am a current graduate student at Stony Brook University studying Higher Education Administration while working in Student Support Services for Cheshire Public Schools. I graduated from Quinnipiac University with a B.A. in English and a minor in Spanish. Additionally, I graduated from the University of Bridgeport with a M.A. in Secondary Education. I have worked in the public school system for four years and have gained much experience in tutoring, teaching, and mentoring students in middle and high school levels. I have tutored students in Math, English, Spanish, and History consistently. While I’m not tutoring or teaching, I continue to find areas of improvement in my teaching methods, tutoring techniques, and lesson plans.
I believe that the heart of learning comes from the relationship between a student and teacher. With this belief, I start my tutoring sessions by understanding and gauging who the student is while observing and assessing student strengths and weaknesses. From there, I am able to create a plan that will put the student in a place of success – each plan is differentiated because not one student learns the same way. My expertise is in English, specifically in reading and writing, but I have years of experience in tutoring students in Math, Spanish, and History. I have taught and tutored in plays, novels, short stories, and numerous poems from the Romantic and Neoclassical Period to high school students. I have experience in implementing writing workshops, setting up student portfolios, and creating writing goals to demonstrate student growth over a period of time. In addition, I have tutored in Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Spanish I and II, and History: Revolutionary War, Industrial Revolution, Civil War, the Great Depression, and World War I and II.
I am an avid reader and writer. When I have the chance, I love to read any book that peaks my interest and write on numerous topics. I am a sports addict – could be an understatement – and follow and participate in football, basketball, soccer, weight lifting, and running. Most importantly, I make time for family, friends, and the community!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have four years of experience working in secondary education (middle and high school). I understand how to scaffold student learning from all the years I spent in Special Education. I have dealt with many students who have various academic, behavioral, or psychological issues during their educational career.
