About Kim

I love to teach. It is the most rewarding and enjoyable endeavor I have ever undertaken. Although I have been a certified teacher for over 25 years, looking back at other jobs I've held I find that all of them involved teaching in one way or another.

I was forced to step away from the classroom for health reasons but that has not diminished my love for or desire to teach. I have found tutoring to be the perfect way to continue sharing my knowledge, experience and skills with students of all ages and backgrounds. My personal strengths lie in working with students with challenges to their success, such as problems with confidence and anxiety, learning disabilities and behavioral issues.

I have a BS in Animal Science from UCONN, that I turned into CT State certifications in General Science, Biology, Vocational Agriculture and Adult Education. I taught as a certified teacher in both regular public high schools and alternative settings. Because of my experience in a private program where I taught all core subjects to the students in my class based on individual plans, I can offer homework help in math, English and history, in addition to tutoring the sciences.

My philosophy is that everyone can learn. You just need the right combination of interest, confidence and presentation. My objective is to find the best way to reach each student, to maximize their potential and help them achieve their academic goals. I have tutored students preparing for the SAT, Biology EOC exams, NPLEX and the NY State Regents exam in Earth Science with significant success.

I am willing to work with clients both in person and on-line. While I will work in a student’s home under the right circumstances, I prefer that in-person sessions be arranged at a local library or other public space. Working with students away from the distractions of home enables them to focus more completely on tutoring goals and progress.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I had the opportunity to teach many subjects when I worked for eight years in a private high school program. Algebra 1 was my favorite math class to teach and, to sharpen and renew my skills I've been practicing online. Please Note: I have no experience with the new Common Core.

Career Development

I worked as a career counselor for the Quinebaug Youth and Family Services, counseling out of school youth and supervising summer youth work crews. I also taught job skills and career exploration classes to all the kids in the summer work program.

I moved on from there to the Windham Regional Community Council doing employment counseling with out of work adults on a one-to-one basis. All of these positions have included career exploration, skills assessment, phone etiquette, application completion, interview techniques, cover letter and resume' writing. I have written several hundred resumes, many of which have earned the applicants employer praise.

Regents

I am also a tutor with Varsity. This spring I was introduced to the NYS Regents exam in Earth Science. I spent about a month tutoring 2 students on line in preparing for this test. Having gone through several of the released tests as part of their review, I feel I could be a positive asset to students studying for this exam.

Because of my certification in Biology, I took the most recent released exam in "Living Environment", which appears to be the replacement for the Biology Regents. I passed with no difficulty

TEAS

The TEAS test is an assessment of basic academic knowledge in reading, mathematics, science, and English and language usage. My science background, certifications and experience qualify me to teach the science portion of the test.
I had the opportunity to teach the remaining subjects covered by the test when I worked for 8 years in a private high school program. I taught all core subjects to each student in my class based on his or her individualized education program (IEP). In keeping with the purpose of the school, each child worked at levels based on their abilities rather than grade level. One student was taking most courses at 11th grade level, except for math (grade 4) and Health (college text).
I have taught the courses covered by the TEAS exam and I know the material. With my additional expertise in biology and Anatomy, I feel I could be an asset to a nursing student taking this exam for admission to a nursing program.

Zoology

My BS from UCONN is in Animal Science. Zoology is also a major part of Biology which I have taught over the past 25 years at both college prep and honors levels. I feel that I am conversant in the topic to a point that will allow me to successfully tutor students in it.
