Michael has done an excellent job. It is not easy to start from zero in English - one of them has a stutter problem - and move our boys to a point where they start to talk English. Especially if the boys prefer to play soccer outside. Michael did a good job and kept their focus on learning. Thanks Michael!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I spent a month helping two young European brothers with virtually no English prepare for American public school. I met with each boy for forty-five minutes, five days a week, and used a variety of techniques to raise their comfort level and to introduce them to common speech usage and patterns.
I tried to keep their interest by playing games, incorporating their immediate surroundings, and focusing on topics of interest to their age group (9-12 years). The results were quite satisfactory and according to their mother, they never once complained about having to study with me.
