About Izze

To students and parents:

I am a student majoring in Physics at Yale, and I am happy to tutor in any physics or math-related subjects. Tutoring will give me the opportunity to act upon my personal conviction that students from all backgrounds deserve to feel confident and capable in math and science while further solidifying my own teaching experience.

For two years, I've spent time communicating in the classroom working on math and science with elementary and high school students. As the coordinator of Engineers Without Border's education task group, I grew fond of sharing with others, especially younger students, not the physics behind engineering projects but my own trials in achieving competence in math and physics. It was great to see their expressions of surprise and relief when I assured them that even college students have to grapple with trying to understand new, foreign-seeming mathematical concepts. I confessed that, in spite of their knowledge, undergrads still make still make algebra errors.

I've also enrolled in a teaching seminar that gave me a semestral opportunity to interact with high school students in a physical chemistry class at the Metropolitan Business Academy. When I compared my experience at MBA to my previous tutoring experience at Bridgeport Central High School, I realized that there were many students who had great aspirations for the math and sciences but sometimes had trouble with combating the negative stereotypes for these subjects. And these students definitely had the potential to develop great problem-solving skills.

With these lessons from working with high school students, I then spent time last year tutoring Yale students for their introductory physics and calculus classes. And from this experience, I've learned that asking students what they don't understand about the concept is a more effective thinking process than merely walking them though example problems. This training has helped me understand the value of balancing conceptual learning and practice.

From my experience working with students of varying skill levels and ages, I believe that I will be an effective tutor for you. And even if math and science help is not what you're looking for, I can also help with other areas such as reading and writing since I have spent time improving in those areas as an undergrad even after taking the SATs.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I've taken at least three courses involving C++, so I'm definitely familiar with the language. I've also had to know the language for my research at the Yale Physics Department.

As part of the curriculum for the Applied Physics major at Yale, I've had to take math courses such as single and multi-variable calculus as well as differential equations. I was also a peer tutor for multi-variable calculus as part of my work-study for the STARS tutoring program.

SAT Reading

I took the SATs back in October 2009 before attending Yale University, and I scored in the 95th percentile.

I actually only scored in the upper 500 zone for each section the first time I took the test in June. So I developed a system to score higher the second time. My system simply involves practice and some guiding tips/techniques shared by my previous tutors.

I definitely know the ups and downs of taking standardized tests, having spent quite a few yet intense months on both the SATs and ACTs. And with my experience, I'm confident that it only takes a few months of guided practice for all students to improve their scores.
