My name is Joseph S. I am currently entering my final semester in a Dual Master's program at New York University, and, in May, I will graduate with a Master's degree in Childhood Education (Grades 1-6) and Special Education. I’m currently on track to get certified in both areas by the end of May in Connecticut as well. Although I’m in currently finishing up a program in New York City, I intend to teach in Connecticut, and I hope to start a full-time teaching position this fall. Just to let you know a bit about myself, I attended Northwestern University, where I double-majored in history and theatre. Although I ultimately decided against a career as an actor, my acting training helped shape my persona as a teacher and made me more natural and creative when teaching and working with children of all ages. After college, I was hired by the American School of Madrid to work as a lower school music assistant teacher, most likely based on my years of experience playing trumpet, piano, and singing. While I enjoyed my time working in a music classroom, what led me towards pursuing a Master's in Childhood (Elementary) Education was my experience as an assistant teacher in a 5th grade classroom, also at the American School of Madrid. I loved the sense of classroom community and the opportunity to work with the same 20-25 children in all of the various core subjects. I enjoyed seeing each student’s progression over the course of the year and getting to know them as individuals with strong, distinctive personalities.
I have experience lead-teaching and tutoring in all of the core subjects (math, language arts, social studies, science), I have taught private trumpet and voice lessons, and I am capable of teaching beginner/intermediate piano lessons as well. I have worked primarily with lower school students (ages 5-12), though I have substituted for older grades and worked with older students before, particularly in music. In terms of my experience in Special Education, I have now had one student-teaching placement in a self-contained 3rd grade classroom, where all 11 students had moderate to significant disabilities, including some students who were on the autism spectrum, some speech and language disabilities, as well as multiple students with various learning disabilities. Now, I am student-teaching in a 4th grade I.C.T. (integrated co-teaching) classroom, where 9 of the 27 students have I.E.P.s (Individualized Education Programs). Between my graduate school courses and my student-teaching placements, I've learned a great deal about the amount of compassion and the degree to which teachers must differentiate when working with students with disabilities. I thoroughly enjoy working with students in small groups and one-on-one (tutor) settings when I get the chance, as it allows me to be flexible and creative in my teaching strategies and I feel I can connect with students the most in that format. Drawing from my experiences as a teacher, my coursework in graduate school, and my natural instincts as an educator, I believe I can truly help whoever I am tutoring reach (or get much closer to reaching) the academic goals and understandings he or she is striving to attain.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been singing since I was 12 years old. I have received three to five years of voice training, learning a variety of breathing and vocal techniques. I studied with some very accomplished voice teachers at two different NYU (CAP21) summer musical theater workshops, and I also took several vocal performance seminars within Northwestern University's prestigious musical theater program. I sang in choir all throughout my schooling, and while working at the American School of Madrid, I sang tenor in the faculty choir and taught private voice lessons to one of the high school students.
