Bio

Most Chinese citizens say I have the best Mandarin they've ever heard from a non-native speaker.

I received an 85% on the listening and speaking portions of the highest level (6) of the New HSK Chinese Proficiency Test. I have studied and worked abroad in Taiwan and Beijing, where I've appeared on many Mandarin talk shows.

I've received amazing feedback from my Mandarin students, who say the way I teach Mandarin "clicks" with them. I know exactly what my students' thought processes and linguistic challenges are, since I was once in their shoes several years ago.

All my closest friends are Chinese or Taiwanese. I live and breathe Chinese everyday. My biggest passion has been studying languages since I was 8 years old, and I'm now making a YouTube channel on studying Chinese.

I am completely fluent in both Traditional and Simplified characters.

Personable and very competent

Gavin was very flexible and helped identify how we can make best use of each session. He has professional experience but still can see learning a new language from a nascent learner.

Flexible and fun!

My 4 year-old daughter has been in a Mandarin immersion preschool since she was 2.7. I didn’t want her language to slip just because of the shelter-in-place order. Choosing Gavin as her tutor was a great decision. My daughter has a lot of energy and gets bored easily. Gavin keeps her engaged, weaving in new vocabulary words as they move through the lesson. He allows her to show and tell, act out scenes and digress ever slightly into a topic she wants to chat about. Allowing her to participate in this way keeps her conversing. The hour flies by and she doesn’t realize that she’s had a lesson; she thinks she’s found a friend with whom to speak Mandarin.
