About David

APPROACH
I will try to think of ways that will help that specific student understand. I will build on a student's prior understanding, or familiar contexts. I will look to determine and address the root or cause of a student's difficulties. I will seek to coordinate my instruction with what the student is learning in the classroom.

MY OBJECTIVE FOR A STUDENT'S SUCCESS
I am interested in helping students succeed in mathematics. One on one interaction, with a student, gives a tutor the opportunity to determine, address and focus on the specific causes of the difficulties a particular student might be having, without the potential distractions of the classroom experience.

WHAT MY TEACHING BACKGROUND CAN BRING TO TUTORING
Because of my past teaching experience, I have a familiarity with what students can typically have difficulties with. Because of the range of subjects I have taught, I can tutor the lower subjects with a view toward what will be important for the higher subjects; and I can teach the higher subjects with a view toward filling prerequisite skill gaps from the lower subjects that a student might have. Because I have classroom teaching experience, my tutoring comes with a first hand understanding of what a student's classroom dynamics can be. A teaching strategy of my one on one non-public school experience was to understand the individual learning needs of each individual student.

TEACHING BACKGROUND
I have experience teaching one on one at a non-public school as well teaching in traditionally populated public school classrooms. I have taught Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Precalculus, Calculus and SAT math. I am familiar with the CT Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. I prepared for teaching through Southern Connecticut State University (SCSU) in a graduate educator preparation program, with additional coursework at SCSU and the University of New Haven.

PRE-TEACHING BACKGROUND
Prior to teaching, I worked in industry in a number of roles with the most time spent coordinating product safety compliance. I have also served the roles of music director and counselor at a camp for those with special needs. I hold a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Connecticut.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have experience teaching Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Precalculus and Calculus, so I can tutor Algebra 1 with insight of how Algebra 1 concepts relate to these higher level math courses. My about 6 school years of teaching experience includes 2 years in a non-public classroom at one to one student to teacher ratios per class (up to 8 classes-students at a time).

Algebra 2

I have taught Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Precalculus and Calculus in a non-public school classroom at a one-to-one student-to-teacher ratio per class (up to 8 classes-students at a time). I also have experience teaching in traditionally populated public school classrooms, during which I have taught Algebra 1 and Algebra 2, Precalculus, and SAT Math preparation.

Calculus

I taught Calculus (AP content for both AB and BC), Precalculus, Algebra 2, and Algebra 1 at a non-public school at a one to one teacher to student ratio (up to 8 classes-students at a time). I have also taught Precalculus, Algebra 2, Algebra 1 and SAT Math preparation in traditionally populated public school classrooms. I am capable of filling in gaps in math skills that are prerequisites for Calculus.

Elementary Math

Though I have not taught Elementary Math, I have taught and had been CT certified to teach mathematics in secondary schools. My education courses include "Teaching Mathematics to Accelerated Students and Low Achievers."

Geometry

I held CT Certification as a secondary school mathematics teacher, achieved through a CT DOE approved planned program at the graduate school of Southern Connecticut State University.

Linear Algebra

I have had two linear algebra courses during my undergraduate college learning and another combined with abstract algebra for a graduate course. I have taught linear algebra in context of Precalculus and Algebra 2.

Praxis

I am qualified to tutor the mathematics component of PRAXIS. I have completed a planned secondary school mathematics educator certification program for teaching mathematics in CT. I have taught Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Precalculus and Calculus. My experience teaching mathematics has been in both a traditionally populated public school context and in a one to one student to teacher ratio per class at a non-public school.

Prealgebra

I have experience teaching Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Precalculus and Calculus, so I can tutor Prealgebra with insight of how its concepts relate to these higher level math courses. The student teaching component, of my teaching certification program, involved teaching Prealgebra and geometry.

Precalculus

I taught Precalculus at a non-public school at a one-to-one student-to-teacher ratio basis, as well as in a traditionally populated public school classroom context. I also taught Calculus, so I have insight into how certain Precalculus concepts are utilized in Calculus. I have also taught Algebra 1 and 2.

Probability

I have taught probability in context of a Precalculus course. I have also taught probability in context of Algebra 1. I have taken a probability course during the pursuit of my engineering degree.

SAT Math

I have taught SAT Math Preparation as a separate course, as well as helping a student prepare for SAT Math Subject test.

SSAT

I am particularly qualified to tutor for the quantitative (math) sections of the SSAT, given I have been a teacher of secondary school (upper/high school) mathematics (Algebras 1 and 2, Precalculus and Calculus) and have held CT certification for teaching secondary school mathematics.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is typically taught as a component of other subjects. I have taught trigonometry as a component of Precalculus in a non-public school on a one to one student to teacher context as well as in a typically populated public classroom.
