About Mary Lou

I have had a passion for learning since early childhood, and have worked in both formal and informal education since 1988. A former elementary classroom teacher and Director of Early Childhood Environmental Education, I have been a science consultant for 14 years, working with students of all ages on topics ranging from schoolyard habitats, to the geology of coastal Connecticut, to improving science education in schools. I have consulted for organizations as varied as the CT State Department of Education, NASA, Carolina Curriculum, Science Companion, the University of Connecticut, NOVA Science, and many schools and districts in Connecticut. At the present time, I am back in the classroom teaching middle school science. I am a member of the National Science Teachers Association, the National Earth Science Teachers Association, the National Association of Geoscience Teachers, the Geological Society of America, the Geological Society of Connecticut, and the International Technology and Engineering Educators Association. In addition, I am a CT Certified Educator who has presented science and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) workshops at the local, regional, state, national, and international levels. Lastly, I hold a B.S. in Animal Science from the University of Connecticut, an M.A.T. from Sacred Heart University, and a Master of Science in Geoscience from Mississippi State University.

Regardless of the education challenges you face, I will work alongside you to create a customized program that addresses your specific needs. As a specialist in both content and pedagogy, I will design a program that will allow you to meet your goals, and improve student achievement.

Why choose me for your tutoring and educational consulting needs?

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
