About Carol

I have been a teacher and a tutor of all grades, abilities and ages for many years. My degrees are in Special Education, Elementary Education, Integrated Language Arts through 9th grade and I hold a Master's Degree in Learning Disabilities.
I love working with students of diverse abilities because let's face it, we are all different and we can learn so much from knowing, respecting and advocating for our differences, learning styles and unique abilities. The greatest part about tutoring is building a strong confidence level that a student can only get from an instructor who works with them regularly, provides immediate feedback and guidance and can see the growth that takes place over time. Tutoring is about supporting, instructing exactly what needs to be learned and is not about assessments that have become too large a part of the education system in recent years.

It's never too late to learn! As a teacher for over 24 years with two degrees, in the last two years, I have re-entered the learning environment as a student of American Sign Language. I plan to continue my growth as a signer and a student learning all I can about Deaf Culture.

My students have told me that the thing that they love about being my Math student is that I understand that they just don't get it. As a young students myself, Math was very difficult so I vowed to be the Math instructor that takes the time to look at problems as concretely as possible. Students must have a sense of number value before they can move on to manipulate numbers. I teach from the foundation up and re-visit each student's level of understanding before expecting them to problem solve at higher levels. Working with manipulatives makes a huge difference, even form middle school students. I have an infinite amount of tools and patience for struggling math students.

I have completed the first four levels of American Sign Language. I love learning to sign and although I consider myself a beginner, I am passionate about sharing the beautiful language with people who are invested in learning about the language and the culture behind it.

I have a strong background and many years of experience with teaching all areas of English Language Arts K- 12 and adults who are still working on language arts skills. I have been a teacher of reading, writing, speaking and listening throughout my teaching and tutoring career. I understand and can teach linguistics, phonemic awareness, beginning reading and writing to advanced literature. I am an avid reader enjoy discussing books of all subjects with others.

I am a person who is Hard of Hearing. I grew up with perfect hearing and fully understand the difference between hearing completely and not hearing everything and the ranges in between based on the individual and the listening environment. I am a wealth of knowledge about supports, accommodations and advocacy.

Students, parents, guardians, if you are looking for a tutor who understands the demands of the educational system and want the support that will foster achievement and life skills to conquer present and future challenges, please contact me. I hold high expectations for my students and for myself. Learning is a lifelong process and it should be valued and enjoyed. I can proudly say that all of my students have enjoyed learning through my lessons, encouragement and support.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
