About Stephanie

My name is Stephanie A., and I have been in the education service since I was 18 years old. I started as a Corps Member with Jumpstart, teaching literacy, oral language, and phonetics to daycare children in under-resources schools. The work was so rewarding, I decided to make teaching and tutoring a permanent part of my daily life.

In 2013, I moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to work in an under-resourced middle school as an eighth grade math tutor and mentor. The work was incredibly rewarding. I learned how to create lesson plans, how to teach effectively, manage behavior, and developed a lot of confidence in the process. Nothing is more rewarding to me than seeing someone reach understanding of the material. I love when I stop needing to make as many corrections, and the person getting tutored slowly stops asking questions because they've gained confidence in their skills. So far, it has become my most favorite type of service, which is why I wish to continue.

I tutored Algebra 1 as a City Year Corps Member in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Because of the effective tutoring of me and my partner, the math scores of the eight grade class as a whole raised by 10 percent.

My first year of University, I majored in Chemistry. I attended all of the Chem Labs, and passed with flying colors. My lowest grade for any Chem test was a 75%. I am a French minor, and successfully completed courses over the 15 University French credits required to be able to declare a minor in French. My majors for University were English and Psychology, and I excelled in Psychology. I worked hard, and was even asked to become a research assistant by one of my graduate professors who I took a class with during a summer before the fall semester. I got to conduct my own research study with a group regarding social prejudices, and it was amazing to be able to present the findings to my class at the end of the summer. I am passionate about Psychology because I am passionate about understanding people, and the reasons we do what we do.

During City Year, I taught the Common Core Standards of Mathematics. It was essential that I consistently researched the standards of the website in order to effectively teach. Because the students were required to learn all of the standards, and as City Year Corps members, we were required to track the progress of each standard, I became very familiar with them. I worked with 16 students total, and every test, I would write down each Common Core Standard, to see which one each students was struggling with, so that I would be better able to address them with my pre-and post testing during my push-ins and my pull-outs. The end of the year was very rewarding to me, as one of my students who I struggled with in the beginning of the year rushed up to me, and gave me a hug, saying, "Thank you, Ms. Stephanie, for getting me into high school." It was everything I could do not to burst into tears in that moment.

I would love to help you in any are which you are struggling in. I believe it empowers whoever is getting tutored to know that they have the capabilities of learning and understanding. If you are struggling, I would love to assist you in reaching your full potential as a learner.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have been published on Everyday Feminism, and I have also written for the Massachusetts Daily Collegian, as a University student.
