About Victor

Hi, my name is Victor and I'm a professional chemistry educator and an academic coach. I've been helping students with all levels of chemistry (from high school to graduate school level) since 2004. I believe I am one of the best chemistry instructors you can find (see my reviews and credentials) and I offer a lot of value with my services.

I have an extensive training in chemistry and chemical education:
* BS and MS in Chemistry (Saint Petersburg State University, Russia)
* MS in Chemistry (Bowling Green State University, OH)
* Doctorate Research in Chemical Education (University of Northern Colorado) focusing on students' learning chemistry.

I'm also well versed and have an extensive training in college counselling, cognitive psychology, study skills and stress/anxiety management techniques and would be happy to help you to successfully adjust to the college environment, develop essential and subject-specific study skills, and alleviate college-related stress and anxiety.

I help students who are:
* taking general, organic, or advanced chemistry classes
* preparing to take MCAT or GRE-Chemistry
* science majors who take chemistry as a part of their chem/bio/med/engineering degree
* struggling with college chemistry
* needing help preparing to chemistry exams
* wanting more guidance on chemistry-specific learning techniques and approaches
* looking for an individualized and personalized college-related stress and anxiety coaching
* looking to develop essential and subject-specific college study skills

I can help you to:
* develop study materials specifically tailored to your learning style
* work on your time-management skills and learning approaches in chemistry
* review the material and prepare you for the midterms or final exam
* focus on specific topics and bring clarity in confusing concepts
* build a strong foundation of chemistry concepts

MY APPROACH:

I use a multifaceted approach in my teaching to help my students. I bring clarity in chemistry by helping you review, organize, and systematize your chemistry knowledge into a coherent whole and I pride myself on my individualized and personalized approach to each student's needs. My goal is to help you master the concepts by teaching you how to break them down to fundamental principles and reconstruct them for yourself from ground-zero. In my experience, learning how to approach and break problems into smaller parts or steps is the most powerful way to learn chemistry. I often hear from students that the amount of information in a chemistry class is overwhelming. It certainly seems that way at times. But it all is built on the same fundamental principles of stoichiometry, molecular geometry, polarity, and molecular orbitals. I teach my students how to identify and apply those principles and learn to see patterns in chemistry problems.

I also spend a considerable amount of time working on test taking skills, study skills, organizational skills, and self efficacy and confidence with my students. I'll give you a safe and comfortable place to learn, make mistakes, learn from them, and grow academically to the next level. I have a proven record of success of my teaching approach. Many of my students come to me with a C's or even a D's at the beginning of the semester or after the first test and leave with A's and B's! See Megan's or Taylor's review for an example of such an accomplishment. However, I don't see college tutoring to be a remedial tool. To me, it is rather like having a personal academic coach who helps you to succeed!

MY EXPECTATIONS and WORK ETHICS:

I'm a highly trained and specialized professional educator. As an active member of the American Chemical Society, American Educational Research Association, National Association for Research in Science Teaching, and American Association for the Advancement of Science, I abide by the honor code and the work ethics associated with my profession. As such, I do all I can to help my students succeed in their college career, however, it is student's responsibility to work hard and apply what I teach them.

I ask my students to give me a copy of their syllabus and all tests and quizzes up to date to assess the situation at the beginning of our engagement. I also expect my students to be in a fairly consistent contact with me between appointments to make sure we're on the same page 100% of the time. Thus, I expect my students to tell me the topics they are covering in class, share their instructor's notes and practice questions, etc. This assures that I prep each of my sessions to best serve my student's needs specifically tailored to each student and their class.

WHERE I TEACH:

Since I strive to provide the best learning experience to all of my students, I have a private office conveniently located in Westminster, CO, right off Denver-Boulder turnpike, only a short drive from most Denver and Boulder schools. By having students come to my office, I can provide a safe, quiet, and comfortable place to learn and accommodate any of my student's needs (tea, coffee, paper, pens, copy/scan services included!) I do have in-office facilities (actual classrooms) to accommodate groups of students. Group rates are $40 per person per hour, so grab a classmate, carpool to the meeting and save!

For my online sessions, I use wyzant state-of-art online classroom whiteboard environment. Group online tutoring option is also available.

Best,
Victor

Policy reminder: I have a 24-hour cancellation policy. I understand that life happens, so I tend to be reasonably lenient about rescheduling. However, I'm a professional academic coach and teaching is my livelihood, so I would expect my students treat my appointments just like appointments with any other professional, such as a doctor, a therapist, or a lawyer.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Great Organic Chemistry Tutor

This past semester I took organic chemistry 1 as a freshman in college. I was prepared to struggle, as I had never been good with chemistry and my professor is notorious for being tough, but this class hit me like a sack of bricks. It felt like no matter how much I studied, I could not get a grasp of the information (and the huge amount of stuff that I had to learn was overwhelming, too)! Luckily
