Mr. C. is a high school teacher in his 9th year in the field. He holds a bachelor's in Astrophysics and a Master's in Secondary Science Education, both degrees from the University of Colorado. During his career, he's taught the following subjects: Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Astronomy, Physical Science, Calculus, Precalculus, Algebra I, Remedial Math, Earth Science.
In every one of his positions as a teacher, Mr. C. has been noted and valued for his skill at making connections with students. His teaching style has also been noted for the variety of methods and analogies he brings to his lessons. He's worked with all students - public, private, remedial, and advanced.
When working one-on-one, Mr. C. teaches by first finding specifically where the student needs help. He then builds confidence and skill by laying a firm conceptual foundation. He believes that a student can succeed much more fully when they not only understand HOW to do a problem, but WHY they're doing it and more specifically why they're doing it the way they've been told to. After laying a firm groundwork, Mr. C. then focuses on getting students to see patterns and big pictures. This gives them the tools to succeed at ANY problems, not just the ones being covered in that week's lessons. Mr. C. is a high school teacher in his 9th year in the field. Mr. C was very accommodating with our schedule and meeting time.
Before we met with him he asked for some very specific questions to prepare for our sessions.
Mr. C knew right away some of the problems my son was having.
Mr. C was early at the meeting location, and when we arrived he got right to work targeting the problem areas.
He was very patient and explained the concepts in a way my son could understand. He made sure my son understood, and if he didn't he would regroup and explain the concept another way until my son had the AHA moment.
My son felt very comfortable with Mr. C from the very start, and liked his enthusiasm. After the session was over, Mr. C gave my son the scratch paper with all the examples he used, which was helpful when my son reviewed the notes the next day.
Mr. C emailed us soon after our session with an answer to a problem my son had trouble with.
I asked my son the next week how the session was helping him in his class. He said the things he learned from Mr. C really helped him with even the new topics they were learning. He feels much more confident in his class and said Mr. C is a great teacher. He doesn't give the answers, but teaches how to approach the problem to solve it.
I highly recommend Joshua! He is AWESOME!
My son has been tutoring with him since the beginning of the school year, and my son mentioned the other day that there would be no way here would be passing his class if it weren't for Josh.
Our son likes Joshua's style, as he writes out examples that he can take with him which is really helpful! His grades are improving!
She said he is amazing! He is really relatable and she seems happy when I pick her up. Looking forward to her having more time with him.
I think learning physics is like learning a foreign language, and to learn it successfully you need someone who can translate physics into plain English. Joshua is an excellent translator.
We have been very pleased with Josh as our physics tutor. He is responsive on email when we set up meetings, flexible with schedule and prompt. But more than that, he relates well to my son and seems to be able to get to the real issues that are causing his problems with understanding physics topics. My son always seems energized after their meetings because of the new understanding he has gained from Josh. I would highly recommend him as a tutor.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My expertise in astronomy covers everything beyond the Earth. Planets, the sun, stars, galaxies, spectroscopy, cosmology, stellar formation and evolution, constellations. You name it. If it's part of astronomy, I've studied it and can help you learn it!
I've taught high school biology several times. The areas I know best are cytology (cells), genetics, taxonomy, ecology, and evolution. I've also taught a year of botany and human anatomy, although my knowledge of those two subjects is a bit weaker.
I have a strong college background with more than 3 years of calculus. I've taught a course worth dual credit (with a local college) for several years. If it's first-year college level calculus material, I know it thoroughly. I can also teach a smattering of calculus 2 (sequences and series) and a fair amount of calculus 3 (double and triple integrals).
I've taught high school chemistry several times, both remedial and advanced. I'm comfortable with electron orbitals, stoichiometry (balancing equations), moles and molarity, chemical and physical properties, the periodic table, the ideal gas law, redox reactions, and thermodynamics. My electrochemistry is a bit weaker, but I can still teach it.
I've taught several years of physical science. My expertise in this subject is in helping kids get a strong "scientific mindset" to help them succeed for the rest of their high school science classes. I'm familiar with all subjects for physical science but place this emphasis on teaching kids to think like scientists do. This process is slow, but helps insure quality experiments, lab write-ups, and understanding later on.
I'm well-versed in all topics in physics. Newton's laws, friction, linear motion (velocity and acceleration), gravity, momentum and impulse, energy, work, power, circuits, optics, thermodynamics, radioactive decay and half life, relativity, and quantum mechanics. Physics can be especially tricky so I help kids focus on how to properly use the equations they're given in class. I've also taught this class as a dual-credit college level course, so if you want your child to get ahead, I know how to push them far!
I've taught a class in this subject for several years. I'll help your child with graphing, special functions, applications of sine, cosine, and tangent. I can teach polar and rectangular coordinates, finding roots of equations, imaginary numbers, conic sections, areas and volumes, and various equations of lines.
My skills in trigonometry allow me to help get across all concepts with sine, cosine, and tangent. I'll help you child with how to use the functions, when to use the functions, how to apply the functions, and how to relate them to the unit circle. The foundation we can lay here will help serve them for any future math courses. I'm comfortable with helping kids memorize key trig functions, too, if school or parents wish it!
