Hi! A few words on my qualifications: I possess a bachelor's degree in Mathematics and a master's degree in Education, and have 5 years of combined full-time and substitute teaching experience. I have also worked as an in-home tutor in the Durango and Fort Collins areas. My students consistently gained greater confidence, improved study skills, and higher grades after I worked with them, and I would love to see the same improvement in your child. My specialty is high school-level mathematics, particularly algebra and trigonometry, though I have had great success working with middle school students as well.
The first session I spend with each student is devoted primarily to getting to know them: how they take notes, whether they carefully show work, how well they understand the relevant terminology, and so on. I strongly believe that the best learning occurs when a student can articulate their own thinking, and so I frequently ask questions to ensure that the process is clear to them. In subsequent sessions we focus first on general problem-solving skills, then on difficulties with specific topics. Success in mathematics is heavily dependent on methodical problem-solving and clear notes, and so addressing weaknesses in these areas is always my first priority. Hi! He has helped my daughter with her confidence in math. She stated, "I learned more in an hour with him than I did in a whole semester with another tutor"
John quickly determined the areas my son needs to work on and created a game plan he can stick to. He is very knowledgeable and patient.
My child, who is pretty talented with math, thought John was a genius. He taught my child methods of checking his work and ways to approach problems to take less time off the clock. Working with John was a great way to get a refresher on math classes taken in 8th grade that will be on the ACT.
John has been very patient with our daughter explaining concepts in trigonometry to her and he is a wonderful, very methodological teacher.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
