Hello! I am Todd, an artist and passionate educator who is excited to teach all kinds of art. I received my Bachelors in Fine Art from Amherst College in 2003, and my Masters in Fine Art from the University at Buffalo in 2016. While a graduate student I taught undergraduate foundation courses in Public Art, Digital Photography and Digital Design including Creative Coding. Since graduating, I have taught as an Adjunct Professor at Universities as well as being a professional artist. I am currently the art teacher for an independent K-12 school in Telluride, CO. I offer instruction on a wide variety of media and have taught classes in Drawing, Illustration, Sculpture, Photography, Design, Video, and Comics.

Even before graduate school, I found ways to fulfill my love of teaching through summer camps in Cartooning, Kite-making, DIY Stereoscopes, and Outdoor Sculpture. I have also taught afternoon and weekend Drawing and Painting classes to students ages four to adult! My philosophy in making art includes the whole world! We will use your interests and hobbies outside of art to make work that is entirely new! I help you to take interesting ideas first, and then find the right medium and materials to make something meaningful. 10 years ago, I took my love of climbing trees and turned into a daily practice. No matter what, I had to climb a tree before midnight, and I would take pictures and video and post about my experiences on my blog. From that 3+ year project came many more art projects about sharing my love of tree-climbing to others.

My methods are playful, outside the box, and meant to challenge your ideas about what art can be. I have a strong technical and traditional background in art and have continued to add new tools like Adobe programs in design and video, creative coding and physical computing experience, and so much more. I will tailor the lessons to your interests and your goals, challenge you to reach beyond your expectations, and we will have a lot of fun along the way!

Adobe Illustrator,

Adobe Illustrator

In addition to my own logo and design work for my art projects, I have been teaching Adobe Illustrator for Design Foundations courses at the college level for 5 years. This creative tool is essential for any designer interested in logos, animation, and more.
Drawing,

Drawing

I was admitted to Amherst College with an art portfolio of paintings and drawings that allowed me to skip 2 levels of studio courses to take Drawing 2 and Painting 2 as a freshmen. I have taught realistic drawing, abstraction, gestural drawing, cartooning, comics, digital drawing and design to students ages 4 to adult. I received a Masters in Fine Art from the University at Buffalo in 2016 and have taught Drawing, Comics, and Digital Design courses at the college level for the past 2 years.
Painting,

Painting

I grew up drawing and painting and by the end of high school had a portfolio that helped me get into Amherst College and skip into Drawing 2 and Painting 2 as a freshmen. From there I took more drawing and painting classes and started getting interested in sculpture and photography. After college I taught realistic drawing and painting classes in an afternoon and weekend art school in Seattle, WA. Students ages ranged from 4-6, 7-13, and teen and adult. Since receiving my Masters in Fine Art from the University at Buffalo in 2016, I have been teaching courses in mostly digital media, but have also taught Drawing, Comics, 2D and 3D Design in traditional media.
Photography,

Photography

I took multiple film photography classes as an undergraduate at Amherst College where I was also the darkroom monitor, setting up the chemicals, maintaining the equipment and assisting the other students. I did an art project for over 3 years where I climbed a different tree everyday and documented every experience with over 10,000 photos and 100+ videos, and shared them on my blog. I have taught Digital Photography for 3 semesters at the college level and have a proficiency in Adobe Photoshop.
Video Production,

Video Production

As a professional artist working in public art, it has become necessary to share those projects through video to share these works to the general public on my website after the original artwork no longer exists. I have taught Video Art for 2 semesters at the college level and am proficient in Adobe Premiere Pro video editing software. I have also taught Digital Storytelling and Stop Motion Animation in a Digital Art Survey college course for 4 semesters using Adobe Premiere Pro as a tool to combine sound, still images, text, video, and vector graphics into compelling stories and artworks.
