Hi, I'm Ashley! I am a patient and reliable tutor with significant education and experience teaching all ages and grade levels. I graduated magna cum laude with a BA in Political Science and International Relations, receiving the award of Most Outstanding Graduate in both fields. I then earned an MA in International Affairs at The George Washington University and an MA in Political Science at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Throughout my time as a student, I had a variety of teaching/tutoring experience as an undergraduate tutor, a graduate teaching assistant, and finally an instructor teaching my own college courses as a Ph.D. student at Carolina.

I love inspiring intellectual curiosity in others, from young children to adults. Given my education and training, I am particularly qualified to help with any political subjects such as Political Science, International Affairs/Relations, Government, Social Studies, and History. My other specialization is English and Literature. To provide one concrete example of my strengths in this area, I received a perfect score on the Verbal section of the GRE, which tests grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension and is essentially the graduate school version of the SAT or ACT. My score was in the 99th percentile, meaning I scored higher than 99% of graduate school applicants who took the exam that year.

In addition to these academic subjects, I offer tutoring in music theory and drums. My musical background is extensive, with 10+ years of training in piano, guitar, and drums. Currently, I offer drumming instruction using a practice pad and a pair of sticks, focusing on the essentials of good drumming (e.g., stick control, reading music, understanding rhythms, technique, rudiments, stick tricks). While these skills absolutely transfer to the drum set, my expertise is on the snare drum (e.g., marching band drumline).

I was active in my high school marching band, playing the cymbals as a freshman, quads/tenors as a sophomore, and the snare as a junior and senior, serving as drum captain my senior year. During these years, I frequently participated in drum battles with other drumlines. I also played drums (snare, bass, and drum set) in the high school symphonic band. My skill set is particularly strong in understanding complex rhythms.

An amazing tutor!

Ashley is a dedicated tutor! She explained a number of concepts to me. Additionally, Ashley came very prepared to the meeting and provided a substantial amount of feedback for me to take in account for my assignment. I think Ashley is an ideal tutor.

Ashley taught me about reading music for the drum. Staffs, bars, measures, rests, etc. Culminated in a complete sheet of music instead of practice lines. Ashley is to send me the sheet music, but I haven't received it yet.

Great 1st drum lesson for my son

Ashley was very thorough and gave my son a good amount of information to run with from different techniques of holding drum sticks to reading drum sheet music and getting him started on rudiments. Ashley also wrapped it up by sending us PDFs of everything she went over including sheet music to practice on through the week.
