About Matthew

In addition to the topics listed, I also tutor: REAL ANALYSIS, ABSTRACT ALGEBRA, MULTIVARIABLE CALCULUS, VECTOR CALCULUS

The art of solving problems extends beyond mathematics. While you may never directly apply a theorem from mathematics in your career, life is full of problems to be solved. In addition to the mathematical techniques necessary for your particular course, I strive to teach the general method of problem solving--a valuable, life-long skill that you will utilize long after you forget the fundamental theorem of calculus. The challenges of math apply directly to the challenges of life.

I have success applying this approach to a diverse set of students, from primary school to college to adult learners. One of the benefits of this approach is that it naturally adapts to different student's styles of learning. When a particular method for a problem does not work for you, I teach you how to find a method that does.

I try to avoid memorization. For any math course, there are some things that you just have to know, but much of the content may be quickly deduced from some core principals. I emphasize the fundamentals of the course, and how you may reason through some of the later results.

I started tutoring in 2008 while earning my BS in Applied Mathematics from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA, and I began tutoring full-time in 2014. Please send me a message to discuss your mathematical problems and goals, and I look forward to helping you develop both as a math student and a person.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Calculus

Since first taking Calculus over 10 years ago, I have helped hundreds of students wade through this sometimes baffling subject. Whether you need help with your algebra, or if you are trying to compute triple integrals in spherical coordinates, I am here to help you succeed.

Differential Equations

Since I took my first course in differential equations eight years ago, I have helped dozens of students wade through this sometimes daunting subject. As an upperclassman I served as a supplemental instructor for the differential equations course, and since matriculating I have helped students both online and in-person with one-on-one tutoring in differential equations.
So, whether you are just trying to figure what a differential equation is, or if you are trying to solve higher order equations with Laplace Transforms, I can help you work towards mastery of this incredibly useful subject.

Linear Algebra

My first interaction with Linear Algebra came in middle school, when an intrepid teacher thought her class could handle the material. A more broad, formal course came in college, in which I earned an A. Since college, I have tutored dozens of students in linear algebra at a variety of levels.

Broadly, I find instructors take one of two approaches to linear algebra. One approach is to start with the definition of a linear transformation, and then proceed to build the definitions of vectors, matrices, vector spaces, linear independence, bases, orthogonality, eigenvectors, etc.

Other instructors start by demonstrating how matrix-vector multiplication represents a system of linear equations, and how to find solutions using elimination and back substitution. From there, they can work through the various matrix factorization (PA = LU, A = QR, A = S Lambda invS, A = Q Lambda Qtranspose, A = U Sigma Vtranspose, etc) using elimination as a guide and motivation.

One approach may be considered more theoretical, the other more applied. In any case, with a new student, I try to understand what approach their class is taking, and stay within the language of that approach. A first course in Linear Algebra is hard enough!

The Perfect Online Tutor

Matthew is, without question, the single best teacher I have ever had the pleasure of running across. I’ve scheduled and met with Matthew for literally dozens of times, and will continue to do so as long as I need help or have questions. In fact, without Matthew’s help, I may have given up on math altogether. After struggling greatly with my Linear Algebra, Calculus, and Analysis classes, Matthe
