I am NOT currently accepting students in: calculus AB/BC, calculus 1 and 2, and statistics.

The art of solving problems extends beyond mathematics. While you may never directly apply a theorem from mathematics in your career, life is full of problems to be solved. In addition to the mathematical techniques necessary for your particular course, I strive to teach the general method of problem solving--a valuable, life-long skill that you will utilize long after you forget the fundamental theorem of calculus. The challenges of math apply directly to the challenges of life.

I have success applying this approach to a diverse set of students, from high school to college and adult learners. One of the benefits of this approach is that it naturally adapts to different student's styles of learning. When a particular method for a problem does not work for you, I teach you how to find a method that does.

I try to avoid memorization. For any math course, there are some things that you just have to know, but much of the content may be quickly deduced from some core principals. I emphasize the fundamentals of the course, and how you may reason through some of the later results.

I started tutoring in 2008 while earning my BS in Applied Mathematics from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA, and I began tutoring full-time in 2014. Please send me a message to discuss your mathematical problems and goals, and I look forward to helping you develop both as a math student and a person.

Differential Equations,

Differential Equations

Since I took my first course in differential equations eight years ago, I have helped dozens of students wade through this sometimes daunting subject. As an upperclassman I served as a supplemental instructor for the differential equations course, and since matriculating I have helped students both online and in-person with one-on-one tutoring in differential equations. Whether you are just trying to figure what a differential equation is, or you are trying to solve higher order equations with Laplace Transforms, or you are trying to solve the wave equation on a circular disk, I can help you work towards mastery of this incredibly useful subject. In addition to the topics listed, I also tutor: REAL ANALYSIS, ABSTRACT ALGEBRA, MULTIVARIABLE CALCULUS, VECTOR CALCULUS, ORDINARY and PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS, PROOFS.
Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

My first exposure to linear algebra came in middle school. Since then, I have close to ten years of experience helping students in a wide variety of linear algebra courses. From row-reduction, to linear transformations, to the Spectral Theorem, I can help you succeed in your computational or proof-based linear algebra course. In addition to the topics listed, I also tutor: REAL ANALYSIS, ABSTRACT ALGEBRA, MULTIVARIABLE CALCULUS, VECTOR CALCULUS, ORDINARY and PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS, PROOFS. BS in Applied Mathematics.
Probability,

Probability

A proper understanding of probability comes from understanding the notion of a probability space, and events in that space. From there comes the idea of a random variable with different probability distributions and the expected value of variance of those random variables. I have success helping students through all parts of a course in probability. In addition to the topics listed, I also tutor: REAL ANALYSIS, ABSTRACT ALGEBRA, MULTIVARIABLE CALCULUS, VECTOR CALCULUS, ORDINARY and PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS, PROOFS.

Excellent, Informative, Calm, Kind, Exceedingly Knowledgeable & Helpful

Excellent tutor; really aided me in understanding vector integral calculus more fully and deeply, even at the doctoral graduate level. He is calm and patient as he guides lesser skilled people through the alleys of information toward deeper Knowing and Intellectual Internalization. Thank you!

Helped me grow

Matthew not only showed me the how and why to my assignment. He also helped me learn how to do it and engaged me. This is the best way to learn rather than just receiving the answer, he was able to guide me.

Excellent tutor

Very patient, and truly understood the basic concepts in a way that could be presented pedagogically to a new comer in a very advanced form of math. We covered Abstract algebra, more specifically groups and how to approach proofs with critical thinking.

New go-to for advanced math

It was challenging to find a tutor for my proofs class, but Matthew was up for it! He makes abstract concepts accessible, is unfazed by the material, and is personable. I contacted him after getting a 45% on a midterm - big yikes - but after working with him I got an 80% on the next test and feel pretty confident going into the final. I lost a little of my joy for math this semester, but doing proofs with Matthew feels like solving a murder mystery. He's put me back in touch with why I chose to major in math in the first place, and I'd definitely like to continue working with him as I move through my advanced math courses.

Amazing and highly recommended tutor!

Amazing tutor! Matt is extremely patient and makes sure I understand concepts thoroughly. I have worked with him for over two semesters and have greatly benefited from his teaching style. He is always reliable, prompt and has accommodated my schedule, even at short notice. Thank you so much!

Very knowledgeable in Linear Algebra

He lays the foundation surrounding the concept and then explains the concept at hand so you have full information. Much better at explaining than my own professor so I highly recommend it.

Best for upper division math!

Matthew is the best tutor I have had on Wyzant so far. He was very clear and easy to understand difficult calculus III concepts. The platform he uses to teach too is superior really cool and have not seen it before. Definitely recommend!

Outstanding Tutor!!

Matthew was kind, patient and knowledgeable in Partial Differential Equations. I took some of my math classes (Multivariable Calculus) 5+ years ago, so I had forgotten some concepts. He pinpointed the important topics that were crucial to the current problem and as soon as I saw them again, I remembered! He has experience with the online environment which I was a little wary about in the beginning. But it was no problem - I could focus and get a problem that had frustrated me previously. I look forward to future sessions with him!

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Able to assist with HW problems which involved very confusing concepts and strategies. Matthew was able to explain everything in a patient and easy manner which allowed for immediate understanding of the material presented and problems posed.
