I am NOT currently accepting students in: calculus AB/BC, calculus 1, 2 and 3, introductory ordinary differential equations, and statistics.

The art of solving problems extends beyond mathematics. While you may never directly apply a theorem from mathematics in your career, life is full of problems to be solved. In addition to the mathematical techniques necessary for your particular course, I strive to teach the general method of problem solving--a valuable, life-long skill that you will utilize long after you forget the fundamental theorem of calculus. The challenges of math apply directly to the challenges of life.

I have success applying this approach to a diverse set of students, from high school to college and adult learners. One of the benefits of this approach is that it naturally adapts to different student's styles of learning. When a particular method for a problem does not work for you, I teach you how to find a method that does.

I try to avoid memorization. For any math course, there are some things that you just have to know, but much of the content may be quickly deduced from some core principals. I emphasize the fundamentals of the course, and how you may reason through some of the later results.

I started tutoring in 2008 while earning my BS in Applied Mathematics from the University of the Pacific in Stockton, CA, and I began tutoring full-time in 2014. Please send me a message to discuss your mathematical problems and goals, and I look forward to helping you develop both as a math student and a person.

Essential for an understanding of modern mathematics is familiarity with groups, rings, fields and the objects of abstract algebra. I have helped students grasp these ideas, as well as the various proof techniques required to make progress in these courses. In addition to the topics listed, I also tutor: REAL ANALYSIS, ABSTRACT ALGEBRA, MULTIVARIABLE CALCULUS, VECTOR CALCULUS, ORDINARY and PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS, PROOFS.

Calculus

Since first taking Calculus over 10 years ago, I have helped hundreds of students wade through this sometimes baffling subject. Whether you need help with your algebra, or if you are trying to compute triple integrals in spherical coordinates, or you are trying to prove that a sequence of functions converges uniformly, I am here to help you succeed. In addition to the topics listed, I also tutor: REAL ANALYSIS, ABSTRACT ALGEBRA, MULTIVARIABLE CALCULUS, VECTOR CALCULUS, ORDINARY and PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS, PROOFS.

Differential Equations,

Differential Equations

Since I took my first course in differential equations eight years ago, I have helped dozens of students wade through this sometimes daunting subject. As an upperclassman I served as a supplemental instructor for the differential equations course, and since matriculating I have helped students both online and in-person with one-on-one tutoring in differential equations. Whether you are just trying to figure what a differential equation is, or you are trying to solve higher order equations with Laplace Transforms, or you are trying to solve the wave equation on a circular disk, I can help you work towards mastery of this incredibly useful subject. In addition to the topics listed, I also tutor: REAL ANALYSIS, ABSTRACT ALGEBRA, MULTIVARIABLE CALCULUS, VECTOR CALCULUS, ORDINARY and PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS, PROOFS.
Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

My first exposure to linear algebra came in middle school. Since then, I have close to ten years of experience helping students in a wide variety of linear algebra courses. From row-reduction, to linear transformations, to the Spectral Theorem, I can help you succeed in your computational or proof-based linear algebra course. In addition to the topics listed, I also tutor: REAL ANALYSIS, ABSTRACT ALGEBRA, MULTIVARIABLE CALCULUS, VECTOR CALCULUS, ORDINARY and PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS, PROOFS. BS in Applied Mathematics.
Probability,

Probability

A proper understanding of probability comes from understanding the notion of a probability space, and events in that space. From there comes the idea of a random variable with different probability distributions and the expected value of variance of those random variables. I have success helping students through all parts of a course in probability. In addition to the topics listed, I also tutor: REAL ANALYSIS, ABSTRACT ALGEBRA, MULTIVARIABLE CALCULUS, VECTOR CALCULUS, ORDINARY and PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS, PROOFS.

Fantastic college level calc tutor

Taking calc 3 remote during the pandemic would have been near impossible but for the clear and informative instruction from Matthew. If you are looking for help with a particular concept or need guidance for the entire semester, you will find it working with Matthew.

Very Easy to Learn From

Probably one of the most efficient tutoring sessions I've done. Made the lesson fly by and got several more things accomplished than I thought we were going to in under an hour. Look forward to working with him again!

Great at helping you understand.

Matthew really helped me understand my differential equations problems. He didn’t simply tell me how to do them; he made me think and work through the problems which is what I need.

A true educator

You know when you have a computer or math issue you can't figure out and you scour YouTube to try to find a video that solves your problem? And, after what feels like forever, you finally find some dude who knows exactly what you need to do to fix it? This is that guy for whatever math issue you have.

Knowledgeable and Entertaining tutor

He's great. Interesting to listen to, let's you lead the direction the session goes. I felt like the things we covered were all areas of need for my season. Entertaining to listen to so it makes the session not so dry and boring. Highly recommend
