I am a former high school teacher and worked in Alternative Independent Study programs. I also work as a writing assessment reader for several school districts in the U.S. and Asia, and am a certified GED Essay Reader. Although my formal education is in Anthropology with an emphasis in Archaeology, and in Secondary Education, I am familiar with and interested in many areas of study. I am not a math person at all, and don't feel comfortable trying to tutor it. As a lifelong guitar player, I have played in, and continue to play in several small bands.
I am not a formal music teacher, but I would enjoy sharing my knowledge of the guitar with interested students, and those who wish to improve on their basic guitar skills.
In academic study areas, I would plan to meet with the student and their parents to discuss the particular needs and objectives in the subjects that they feel they need to improve in. I would also discuss what the student's expectations are relative to tutoring. I am comfortable using the student's familiar school texts, or if desired, could make recommendations about choosing appropriate material.
I live north of Steamboat Springs and am willing to travel to town, but not to South Routt County. The library is a possible place to meet and study in one of the quiet side rooms. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have an undergraduate degree in Anthropology from Ripon College, Ripon, Wisconsin, 1979.
I completed 1.5 years of a Master's program in Archaeology at the University of Arizona in 1980-82. I also was an instructor at an archaeological field school run by Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in the summer of 1979.
I have studied guitar and played in various groups from the age of ten. I am also half of the duo of "Kat n Jonny" in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. I have also performed with the Black Eyed Junkos and have scored an independent film.
I can work with beginning or intermediate students who would like learn how to play the guitar.
