About Jesse

Hello all,

My name is Jesse W. and I get it. High School/Middle School/any school can be a tough time in your life. I also understand that not everyone likes History. I get that too. I actually hated the subject when I was in Middle and High School. It was not until I had a really great college professor that showed me that History was about people that I came to love it. History is all about the connections of human beings and their environment, their motivations, dreams, beliefs, actions, success and failures. Those very actions still live in our world today, and I love to help students explore and realize these concepts. Since I had those struggles in school and those frustrations to boot, I feel I can find ways to help students bridge that gap to true educational understandings. As well as develop real world strategies to cope with subjects they may not necessarily like.

History is not all my life of course. I love to hike, climb and play music as well. This is why I try to relate Social Studies to hobbies and interests of the students so that what they are learning is relevant to their lives or at the very least easier to remember. Whatever you interests may be, I am happy to help.

I currently hold a Bachelor's Degree in History with a minor in Spanish. I am working on finishing a Master's Degree in Education: Curriculum Studies. I also have an Associate's Degree which covered subjects as numerous as Astronomy to Nutrition.

I studied numerous aspects of history and social studies including the US West since 1846, the US as a world power, Classical Greece and Rome, African Civilization, Mexican History, the History of Latin America, Historians Craft (which taught the history of history as well as valuable research and presentation skills), Caribbean History, Cold War Germany, Asian Civilization, North American Indians, the Political Science of War and Peace, Art and Literature of Ancient and Medieval Civilizations, Macro Economics and Human Geography. My Capstone paper covered women and the use of firearms from 1850-1910 East Vs. West, and I wrote several research papers on Literature, including Latin American and Spanish Literature.

Bottom line, I can usually help you get through just about any Social Studies topic.

I look forward to hearing from you and working with you. The great thing about tutoring is that it meets your individual needs. I hope to find new ways to make history relevant to any interest. Anything from Automotive Shop to Biology to Drama can be incorporated into History.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Political Science

I hold a Bachelor's Degree in History with a minor in Spanish. I am working on finishing a Master's Degree in Education: Curriculum Studies. We discussed aspects about political science in all my history classes. I also took a class on the political science of War and Peace. In the latter, we heavily investigated complex and deep topics about how states are formed, how they disintegrate, why they disintegrate and the effects that this disintegration has. The study of wars and commerce can tell us much about why borders change, why countries invade one another and countless other topics. I tend to always think in terms of political science when researching events.

One of the best examples would be the Western United States (against the nations of Native Americans and Mexico). Often it is easiest to explore the average citizen's motivation in this formation. For instance, although The Mexican populace in Santa Fe had obvious reasons to hold loyalty to Mexico, their material needs could often be met by that nation. Trade became easier with St. Louis and this in time lead that region to become linked, bringing about settlements along the way. Resistance during the Mexican American War in those regions was much less heavy because it simply was not as important to the people of Santa Fe as it was to those living in proximity to Mexico City. It is through this empathy that I try to get students to place themselves in the shoes of historical actors.
