About Sharon

I have been teaching children and young adults in various capacities for more than 25 years. In addition to my degrees and experience in general and Special Education at the high school, middle school, and elementary levels, I have completed and applied significant professional training in related subjects, including IEP development, assessments, autism disorders. My experience with children and young adults of many ages has included extensive case management and tutoring of students who struggle within the traditional classroom setting and individualized instruction for students whose unique challenges vary as widely as their life experiences and educational backgrounds. I have also taught general education classes at the elementary level and am considered “highly qualified” by the Department of Education in the field of special education at both the elementary and secondary levels.

I am also an adjunct faculty member with my Alma Mater, where I continue to refine my knowledge by teaching, and learning from, a new generation of teachers at both undergraduate and master's levels. This breadth of experience in my field, my continued exposure to current trends and methods as a professor and mentor to new teachers around the country, and, most importantly, my desire to create a loving, affirming, and yet challenging environment for each of my students makes me especially prepared to meet the unique educational needs of each of my students.

I enjoy spending time with students, giving them the tools and strategies to work around their struggles in order to succeed in school. If you feel I might be a good fit for your particular needs, please give me a call to learn more, talk about your tutoring needs, or check availability of session times.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have my master's degree in Special Education as a Generalist and Specialist, including ADHD/ADD. I have completed multiple trainings in ADHD/ADD, Applied Behavior Analysis, Positive Behavior Intervention and Support, and other supports for students ages 5-21. I have taught students with ADHD/ADD at all levels within the public school system, as well, specializing in severe/profound needs, multiple handicaps and other social communication disorders.

I have my master's degree in Special Education ages 5-21 as a generalist and specialist as defined by the state of Colorado. I have also completed multiple trainings in multi-sensory methods (Lindamood-Bell, for example) for teaching students with dyslexia at the elementary and middle school levels. I have recently completed the Breaking the Code and HillRap training for assessing and supporting learners that struggle with phonics and how to support learning through active engagement and repetition through oral drill, word attack, sight words, and reading fluency. I am working through additional classes through The Hill Center to complete their Dyslexia Specialist certification that focuses on phonics and the dyslexic student.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold a Colorado Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education (K-6), an undergraduate degree in elementary education (including teaching reading, math, and writing), and a master's degree in special education. In my most recent position as a Resource Teacher in a K-8 charter school, I have provided supplemental services in reading, math, and writing for students at each grade level.
