Hey there! My name is Steven and I just completed my freshmen year at the University of Chicago. I'm back home in Colorado and would love for the opportunity to help you out this summer. I tutored around my neighborhood in high school and am excited to get back into it!

Hey there! My name is Steven and I just completed my freshmen year at the University of Chicago. I'm back home in Colorado and would love for the opportunity to help you out this summer. I tutored around my neighborhood in high school and am excited to get back into it!

As a recent high school graduate, I understand what is expected in curriculum and can relate to students' strengths and weaknesses as they relate to classroom academics. I also took advantage of Wyzant's tutoring platform in high school and am excited to give back.

I believe that understanding the theories behind algebraic and calculus principles is essential to being able to apply them in the correct situations. My proof-based background is very helpful in my ability to articulate those underlying theories and make sure students grasp them as well.

If a student is looking for help with a particular concept, I usually begin by explaining the concept and any other relevant information. Then, depending on the students' comfort level, either I can work through an example problem or I can assist them in working through a problem. I think that repetition is key to understanding a particular concept, and the ultimate goal will be for the student to be able to comfortably apply the concept in a multitude of situations without my help.

I'm also happy to help with homework questions. I think it's important, especially with homework problems, to first understand what a particular question is testing the student on (for instance, is this problem looking for a geometric solution, or an algebraic one?). I firmly believe that the ability to decipher what a problem is asking the student to do is critical to academic success. That way, irregardless of a particular questions' wording or format, the student can determine the proper approach. After the student understands what the problem's intent is, I will help guide them in using the principles they have learned in class to answer it.

Aside from mathematics, I am also familiar with many computer-science principles, particularly in the area of web design. Helping students learn web design requires a similar approach to my math tutoring approach - understand the function of various commands, and then their application in different contexts. I currently operate two hand-coded websites, so I'm used to real-world applications of web-design and can instruct students in all steps of the process, from coding a website to deploying it on their own URL.

I'm comfortable working in a variety of academic disciplines and if you feel that a session was unhelpful I am always willing to refund it. I understand that every student works at a different pace and am able to accommodate any particular learning style.

Here are some of my qualifications:
34 ACT
5 on the AP Calculus AB exam
3.99/4.00 High School GPA
University of Chicago equivalents to Calculus AB, BC, Vector Calc

I am comfortable tutoring in algebra, calculus, and introductory vector calculus. I have experience working with proof-based mathematics, including epsilon-delta proofs and am happy to help out in that area should you need it. In addition, I have a strong trigonometric background. Most of my formal education in college has focused on proof-based mathematics, so I understand both the applications of mathematical principles, and the theory behind them.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions - I look forward to meeting you!
