Bio

One of the first students I ever tutored went from a D to a B in Spanish in a few short weeks and ended up taking four years of high school Spanish and minoring in it in college. One of my current students I helped go from a C- to an A in little over two weeks. Whatever your grade, your goal, or the subject, I am here to help you unlock your potential and accomplish what you wish to achieve.

Every person has different needs and abilities. I specialize in assessing each student individually and tailoring my instruction accordingly. My goal is to help children and adults engross themselves in what they are learning so that overcoming difficulties and furthering their skills become easier. I also strive for each student to quickly reach the point that my help is no longer needed. Nonetheless I happily provide ongoing support to those for whom it benefits.

My teaching career began at a unique school with four years of one on one teaching. I have since dedicated over 16 years, in private sessions and classrooms, to engaging students and fostering a love for learning. I seek to meet them where they are academically, at all levels and ages, and help them reach their potential. Using a variety of techniques, I patiently challenge all my students to understand their own learning styles so they learn better. When necessary, I teach study skills and shortcuts for success.

SPANISH
As a bilingual speaker my entire life, I have helped others learn English, from my own family members to the schoolchildren I have taught in class throughout my instructional career to adults and children I have helped privately. I diagnose each individual's particular strengths and deficits to tailor instruction that meets individual needs. For example, someone trying to pass the TOEFL for college entrance will obviously have different needs than a child who struggles with reading or an illiterate adult who simply wants to communicate better at work.
If desired, I use special techniques to help students pronounce and enunciate correctly, and work with them on mistakes most other instructors miss in order for others to understood and taken them seriously. I have the patience of JOB and have worked with people of many different languages and learning disabilities in my 20 year teaching career. My lessons are interesting, relevant and effective. I also help recommend programs, software and other resources for students to work on their own.
As a native Spanish speaker growing up in the United States, I can uniquely appreciate the struggles others have when learning Spanish, particularly grammar. In addition to tutoring children and adults for several years, I taught all levels of high school Spanish for five years. My Advanced Placement students all made 4s or 5s on their A.P. Spanish Language or Literature exams. I have worked with everyone from small children to a doctoral candidate in Religion for several weeks in translating older texts.
My translating skills have been used in many contexts including agriculture, the medical field, and for historical texts including a 12th century Spanish manuscript. I have co-written the Spanish version of a romantic tango based on the English version, and have written lyrics for salsa and merengue songs. More importantly, I have been able to bring failing students to Bs and As within the same semester.

Social Studies
In the more than 15 years I have taught social studies, I have written curriculum and instructional practices for several schools, written World History curriculum standards for the state of Georgia, published articles, taught almost all middle and high school social studies courses, and have led state conference and staff development seminars for social studies teachers. My teaching successes include years of developing new ways for students to understand difficult concepts in History, Economics, Civics, etc. My students in A.P. U.S. History and A.P. U.S. Government scored 4s or 5s. I have also instructed Master's level social studies teaching candidates and am finishing a PhD in Social Studies education.
I seek for all my students to think critically and learn to research effectively.

Regardless of your needs, abilities, or personality, I can help you find success and go from a struggler to a confident, independent learner. Contact me now. I still have some available slots.
