About Heather

I am passionate about learning. It is this passion and enthusiasm that I am most excited to share with students. I graduated from Harvard (1994) and Harvard Law School (1997) and went on to success in the corporate world. Over the past two decades, I have been recognized for my expertise and talent as a writer, leader, and trainer/ teacher.

Early in my career, I excelled in standardized tests, scoring an 800 on the SAT Math section. I similarly scored 198, or 99% on the LSAT. I sat for both the Massachusetts and Colorado bar exams.

My goal for each session or lesson is to inspire and encourage, as well as to teach. I want students not only to develop their own abilities but also to have confidence in these abilities as they move forward in their lessons, testing, and studies. It is my goal that tutoring lead to more than just success on an exam but to writing and career lessons that can help students as they begin their legal practice.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bar Exam

I am a Harvard Law School, '97 graduate. I have successfully passed both the Colorado and Massachusetts bars on the first attempts. I and have been in practice for more than 19 years.

College Counseling

I was admitted to and attended Harvard University and Harvard Law School. At HLS, I counseled students applying to law school. In the past, I have interviewed students on behalf of Harvard admissions. I currently mentor young women and young attorneys in finding the best career fit for their personalities and their lives.

Law

I graduated in 1997 from Harvard Law School and Harvard College in 1994. While at HLS, I was Editor-in-Chief of the Harvard Negotiation Law Review. I wish I say that I have always been a great writer; however, what I have achieved as a writer is not due to raw talent. I intentionally focused on improving my writing skills and worked to improve. I spent my career as litigation counsel at nationally recognized law firms and at large corporations. Most recently, I served as Vice President of Consumer Protection Compliance for a Fortune 200 global financial services company. In each of my prior positions, I have been recognized because of my writing ability.

Piano

I have been a pianist for 40 years, and I began providing music instruction to students more than two and a half decades ago. Although a challenging legal and executive career sidelined my providing piano lessons, I still took on a few select students, just for fun. My philosophy is to focus not only on technique and theory, but also on making piano fun. I believe that, like all of us, kids gravitate to what they enjoy. Finding music with which they are familiar and that they enjoy while they learn the fundamentals is one of the keys to keeping children engaged and enthusiastic about prioritizing piano practice throughout their busy adolescent and teenage years.

Public Speaking

I graduated from Harvard Law School, cum laude in 1997. I have 16 years in private litigation practice. I also served as vice president of a Fortune 500 publicly-traded financial institution, where I delivered at least a half dozen presentations each week. I was known for my effective presentation skills and surprised audiences by engaging them and making subjects like "Dodd-Frank Act Compliance" interesting and relevant to their jobs. My speaking philosophy is to focus more on whether the audience is connecting with the material, than on what they think of me or my presentation. In teaching public speaking, I employ this same philosophy: Students should be such masters of their subjects that they need not memorize a speech but can follow an outline and should be able to engage with the connective, charismatic "spark" of the audience.

Social Studies

I hold a bachelor's degree in Social Studies, magna cum laude, from Harvard University (1994), where I took courses in History, Economics, Political Science, and Sociology. I also studied political and legal theory extensively at Harvard and Harvard Law School. My senior thesis was a cross-departmental thesis about the narrative of race relations in a certain Southern community from the early 1900s to the 1980s.
