About Steven

I have been a lifelong educator and tutor, literally since I was in grade school. As a sixth grader, I was selected to read and enhance literacy skills for first and second graders in my elementary school. As I advanced my education I consistently maintained this approach to shared learning. When in graduate school, I worked part-time as a library coordinator helping incoming students with enhancing their research and library skills. Outside of formal schooling, I have been repeatedly selected to lead in ad hoc training or on-the-job training. Additionally, for several years I have tutored English as a second language (ESL) students in helping them gain literacy and reading skills. Moreover, I work with immigrants in helping them study and prepare for the citizenship test. As you can see, my experience is wide and varied when it comes to educational tutoring. Since I have worked with many students over the years, my approach is tailored toward the specific student. I find this enhances learning, makes the student more comfortable and helps the overall experience to be more pleasant.

Over the years I have obtained several credentials. I have an M.A. in education, an equivalent M.A. in history and am finishing a Ph.D. in history. I did my graduate work in Claremont, CA. and my Bachelor's degree is in Business from a small Catholic college, Regis University, in Denver, Colorado. I have taught at the middle-school level, the high-school level and the college level. At a small middle-school in Champaign, IL, I taught Reading, Language Arts and Math. At the high-school level I taught history and at the college level I worked in ethnic/Latino studies as well as the history of the Southwest along with the minority experience in the West and Southwest. My educational background ranges from the American Renaissance authors (Melville, Emerson, Hawthorne, Stowe & Whitman) to gender studies and ethnic and Latin American studies. I am also familiar with what is called Postcolonial scholarship of the Global South. As you can see, my scholarly background is varied. This makes me well suited to tutor Reading or College Preparatory Reading. I can also cover American history as well as world history. I am comfortable with high-school age students, college age students and older adult students.

Finally, my approach to tutoring is well humored, informal but rigorous. My goal is to match the rigor the text or assignment requires and help you negotiate this terrain as easily as possible. Learning doesn't have to be painful; believe it or not, it can actually be fun. I'm always working to facilitate this process to your benefit. It is my explicit purpose to help you achieve your educational goal. In this purpose, I bring with me all the experience and advantages I can summon to help you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

I have experience tutoring in literacy, reading, reading comprehension and reading for writing. I have tutored for Douglas county libraries working with students and general literacy requirements. As a college professor, I helped students understand difficult reading material so they may write about the topic and answer questions both written and oral. Working closely with the student in order to build confidence in literacy, I help in identifying comprehension tools such as bookmarking and note taking. I have experience tutoring a wide range of students from middle-school students to students at the graduate level. I adapt my tutoring style and method to the student. I find this makes the student more comfortable and facilitates faster learning.

Social Studies

I have an M.A. equivalent in history. I am intimately familiar with the applications of history to the teaching of social studies. I also have a background in sociology and psychology which play a marginal role in studying social studies.

World History

I am familiar with race and ethnic relation in what is now referred to as the Global South. This includes South America, Africa and Asia. This also includes the postcolonial movement from the 1960s forward. Because of this background, I have a general knowledge of world historical movements, places and events.
