In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been teaching English to students with Asperger's and other special needs for six years. Last year, I had the privilege to co-teach with a colleague who had a Special Education endorsement in an inclusive classroom with a high special needs student population. This classroom was so successful it was used as a pilot for a new program within the district.
I taught a tutorial class for five years with great results in helping students achieve strategies for increasing productivity and organization. I was able to help one student whom I am tutoring bring her GPA from a .5 to a 2.9 in one quarter. I believe that organization and good study habits make the most difference in any student's success.
