No matter what your age – from teenager to retiree, the basic tenets of interpretation of the spoken word are the same. No matter what your age – from teenager to retiree, the basic tenets of interpretation of the spoken word are the same. My approach with any student is to take them precisely from where they are now – relate to every-day circumstances and materials at hand (or, in some instances to their specific areas of interest) – and provide applicable coaching. My recently published book "More Than Your Words" - 'Harness the power of your most effective speaking voice', will serve as a guide throughout the tutoring sessions. As a more thorough introduction of who I am - and some insight into the method and content, you may access the book on Amazon.

By applying necessary analysis of the written word, along with personally demonstrating various vocal and interpretation techniques, the end result of becoming more fluent, more easily understood and being able to command the attention of an audience will be achieved. Even though there will always be a small element of “imitation” involved in the teaching environment, the necessary understanding of the student’s presentation, allowing you to pursue your own “voice” is of primary interest.

Even though I have had a considerable amount of speech, music and theatrical training, (University of Wisconsin), my main concentration has always been to relate to every day communication, the business community and interpersonal relationships. While being in the music entertainment profession, addressing large audiences provided insight into methods of relating to smaller groups. I have served as National sales and training director for several industries, and currently, devote much of my time facilitating workshops on communication and public speaking in the corporate world. I also invoke the ageless writings and oratory mastery of Mark Twain during sections of the lessons.

Whatever your goals are in terms of getting more comfortable and empowered with your speaking efforts, I know I can be of assistance while making it an enjoyable experience.

Public Speaking

Public speaking can be learned…and learned effectively. I have the practical experience in this area to relate to every day circumstances from addressing church congregations, leading service club meetings, conducting national sales gatherings, playing to thousands in international concert/theatrical settings, as well as being a voice-over professional. I also have the training, incorporating music, speech the theater education beginning in High school and extending through intense training at the University of Wisconsin. In terms of actual hands-on training, I have been involved as head trainer for two separate national industries in making presentations to both the public and members of the American Institute of Architects. In this context, I have utilized in person instruction as well as video feedback in my training methods in order to teach staff members to make similar presentations. Every student enters the world of public speaking at a different level. It doesn’t matter whether in high school or a retiree, the tutoring method is always individually personalized – taking the student where he/she is – addressing the practical every-day circumstance in which they’re involved – and building upon their strengths. Time will be split between the understanding/analysis of the written word, its subsequent interpretation, and the actual vocal and body language techniques that are incorporated to convey the intended meaning. Included in the curriculum will be “Addressing and overcoming stage fright”, “Active listening to oneself during the presentation”, “Relaxation techniques”, “Improving voice quality”, “How to effectively modulate vocal tone, rhythm and pitch variation”, “How not to be boring”, “Effective eye contact”, and “How to make certain your audience is listening.” Additional emphasis will be placed on extemporaneous speaking if desired.

Public Speaking Superman

“When you’re surrounded by people who share a passionate commitment around a common purpose, anything is possible." Howard Schultz To say we enjoyed our sessions with Carl is a massive understatement! Passionate about life, liberty and the pursuit of effective public speaking, Carl delivered highly interactive and transformational instruction that resulted in rapid, tangible results for our 15 year old son’s oration. As a professional musician, voiceover artist and public speaker, Carl’s teaching methods are honed, tweaked and perfected. He tailored his groundbreaking methods to fit our specific needs and built on our son’s existing AND hidden strengths! Their sessions were fun, creative, supportive and productive. Carl continued to demonstrate his commitment and passion for personal development as he supported us through pre and post oration details. He made sure our son was locked on and presentation-ready. The end result was a remarkable (and lifelong) shift in our child’s public speaking skills. Honestly, inviting Carl on this journey with our family was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made. He has the patience of Job and was truly a partner in our child’s success. I’m certain if you invite Carl on your journey, whatever it is, you’ll feel the same way. :-) P.S. At this point, I may be “sharing” a bit too much, but if you’re reading this review, you’re probably considering Carl as a tutor. You’re searching, trying to find the absolute best tutor; you’re do everything possible to support your child and ensure his or her success and wellbeing -- a leg up. It's an important decision. I get it. I’m a mom, too. That being said, you should know we continue to refer to Carl as “Public Speaking Superman” at our house, because after getting to know Carl, we’ve come to realize he truly IS one of the most interesting human beings in the universe. He’s done a bazillion-million things and he’s accomplished at all of them. I mean, the man has even written a one-of-a-kind (I know this because I’m a research freak) book. (to clarify, Carl did NOT promote his book -- see research freak reference). We bought the hardcopy and the Kindle versions on Amazon immediately after our first session with him. I’ve often wondered if he noticed us scrambling for our computers as we smiled, waved and watched him pull out of our driveway? Oh well, we have no shame. Our son rocked the oration and all is well with the world. :-)
