About Dylan

A J.D. knows how to study and communicate, a political scientist knows how to use the information that matters, and an actor knows how to entertain. The acquisition of knowledge should be fun, and I'm intimately familiar with how it's done.

At every step of my education, from diploma to doctorate, I've both availed myself of, and provided, individual instruction to maximize results; Results are the name of the game. I specialize in tutoring history, English, creative writing, and test preparation for the ACT, SAT, and LSAT. I also coach acting, comedy, and improvisation for those looking for a creative challenge.

A tutor is as much an ally as a teacher, a coach as much as an instructor. I'd love to be a brain on your sideline.

Success on the English on the ACT and SAT comes from mastering fundamentals and guided practice. It takes a coach as much as a teacher, and that's a role I perform well. Under my instruction, students will perform the necessary review and study to strengthen their command of the building blocks of effective communication. Mastery of the basics of English will accompany rigorous, detailed practice, and with that, hopefully, will come results.

The LSAT is a test of logic more than knowledge, and students who attack it without any substantive guidance can find themselves shocked and overwhelmed by a test unlike anything they've ever taken before. A good LSAT tutor should endeavor to clear the fog and teach the very mindset the test rewards. Through guided practice and specific discussion, my students can unpack the logic of the law school admissions test, and either score strongly, or improve a past score.

No story will ever be as fascinating as the story of humanity: It has conflict, romance, triumph, and tragedy, on scales both vast and intimate, across epochs as expansive as oceans. It is a great shame, then, that the instruction of history devolves too often into a rote memorization of dates and events, when it should be engaged with and savored as the narrative it is. I can pair my expansive knowledge of history with my love of it, and the joy I take in storytelling, to make the study of history as fun and engaging as I possibly can. When a student wants to learn more, and endeavors to understand, learning is made substantially easier. Excellence in history follows interest in history.

Tutoring is as much about engaging with a student as teaching them. It's about giving them the tools to succeed in conjunction with the knowledge they need to do so. Each relationship between a student and a tutor is different, and each is special. Contact me today to see how I can help you: Together, we can tackle the obstacles in front of you together, get past them, learn a few things along the way, and maybe have a little bit of fun.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I have been studying history, specifically American and European history, for twenty years. In addition to thousands of books read and formal education, I achieved maximum test scores in all Advanced Placement history courses I took. I know what makes American history fun, and I know what makes it memorable, and I bring my tutoring students the information they need in the same user-friendly way I was exposed to it. History is epic and fantasy, and by sharing the joy of historical study with students, courses that were once a chore become a treat.

Government & Politics

Government and politics have been more than a passing interest of mine for over a decade: I studied political science at the University of Denver, graduated with a near-perfect GPA and a B.A. in 2008. I then attended law school in San Francisco, where I was exposed to the nuts and bolts of policy and to the judiciary first hand. This important topic has countless layers, and has interested and driven students of all ages for as long as it has been taught in schools. I can use my expertise and enthusiasm to assist in a fun, compelling supplement to a civics education.

Political Science

I graduated from the University of Denver in 2008 with a bachelor's degree in political science. My coursework was diverse in subject matter and included both academic study and research as components. I graduated with a 3.7 GPA and was held in high esteem by my peers in the department.

SAT Reading

I focus on the foundations for English and Reading success for the SAT and the ACT: A strong command of the rules of grammar, of style, and of the English language itself. When one combines foundational skills and knowledge with knowledge of the test in question, improvements in score usually follow. By breaking down practice questions and sections to their component parts and going over them with a fine-toothed comb, students can feel prepared, and when a student feels prepared, they feel confident and relaxed, another key component to success.

World History

I have been studying world history, with emphasis on American and European history, for twenty years. In addition to thousands of books read and formal education, I achieved maximum test scores in all Advanced Placement history courses I took. The key to learning history, truly learning it, is to recognize that it is a narrative, the best story one could possibly tell. By sharing the joy of historical study with students, courses that were once a chore become a treat.
