The most rewarding years of my life have been spent teaching high school juniors and seniors the art of expressive writing and comprehensive reading. Outside of the classroom, I spent numerous hours each week tutoring, one-on-one, for coursework and testing success. Individual attention is the key to understanding and accomplishment for many students, since we all have different learning styles that often cannot be addressed in a classroom environment. Working with a tutor who understands the different learning modalities will guarantee you personal rewards for the time and money spent. My successes are many, and I only wish you could speak with the students who still contact me to thank me and to ask me questions about language and, most especially, about writing. I love personal contact because it allows me to demonstrate my passion for teaching in a very individual and caring way. Whether you are interested in general English language skills or in very specialized testing strategies, I know that I can help.
Since I have only been retired for one year, teaching is not a distant memory, and I miss the challenge, the satisfaction, and the excitement of watching students learn to improve their language skills and achieve their academic goals. Being a good teacher is a gift, one that I am so grateful to possess. Tutoring you will afford me the opportunity to reconnect with the profession I so dearly love.
I have twenty years experience teaching high school juniors and seniors. In my Junior English classes, I embedded ACT English and Reading test preparation and test-taking strategies. In addition, I taught Advanced Placement Language and Composition for twelve years during which time ninety percent of my AP students continually participated and seventy-five to eighty-five percent of those continually passed. Of the many skills I developed, successfully teaching effective writing and grammar understanding to those who struggled are among my proudest achievements.
My free time as a retiree provides the flexibility and accessibility required for successful tutoring. I look forward to meeting you and helping you in your journey through life. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
