I have been a teacher since 1985 in the fields of science, ESL (English as a Second Language), GED, and health care. I have taught grades 1-12, college, university, and adults. My educational background includes a BS degree and a MS degree in nursing, and a MS degree in Natural Science. Currently, I am a licensed science teacher.
I recently returned from Asia where I taught English as a Foreign Language in China and South Korea for 6 years. In previous years, I taught life science, earth science, human anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, health care courses, GED (all subjects), and ESL at a university in Colorado. My experience includes working as a tutor of elementary to high school students, graduate students at a US university, and administrators at a college in China. I am familiar with both TOEFL and IELTS testing.
Over the years, I have worked with a variety of students from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds. My teaching philosophy is to foster the skills and abilities of individual students. Due to my extensive background in teaching, I am able to hone in on the needs of a student, and to design a program that works for him/her. I feel it is vital to encourage and motivate students to want to learn. I encourage interaction with students and their direct participation in a lesson. I will revise my teaching plan as needed to fit the needs of each student.
I consider myself to be an excellent writer and proofreader, and have done proofreading of professional papers of graduate students. I have assisted graduate students from Colorado State University in preparing their presentations for professional conferences.
I look forward to hearing from you as to how I can help you or your child as a tutor.

She is very knowledgeable. She has an extensive background in teaching. She was positive and encouraging while tutoring my daughter.
Therese was excellent for my husband. He hasn't been in school in eight years and she was able to talk him through each question and made sure he understood. She has a great sense of humor and really put him at ease.
Therese was extremely helpful, knowledgeable and to the point. My son felt so much more confident, simply understanding the techniques and strategies of how to take the test. He now knows his weak points and his anxiety was truly taken from a 10 down to a 2. Thank you so much!!!! My son is planning on taking the test multiple times if needed and we will continue to use Therese for ongoing guidance. After all, this is his future!!!!
She is an experienced and knowledgeable ESL tutor. She assessed my English level including my pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary the first session. She corrected my pronunciation and grammar based on the emails I sent to her and the articles and stories I wrote. I liked that she asked me to use a different way--a higher level way to reconstruct my sentence, and she recorded some difficult words for me to practice at home. She is an excellent ESL tutor, and I will continue to have her as my tutor.
Terri has been such a help for my daughter. She's patient, but firm, and she's really good at making her student figure the answers out on their own instead of giving them the answer. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a tutor! Thanks Terri!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taken inorganic, organic and biochemistry in college. I have tutored numerous students in the sciences, including chemistry.
I have tutored basic mathematics, prealgebra and geometry basics.
I have taught ESL/EFL (English as a Second/Foreign Language) in China for five years, and in South Korea for six months. I also taught and tutored ESL at Colorado State University. Students taught by me ranged in age from grade 1-12, college, and adults.
I have experience teaching the four areas of English: reading, writing, speaking and listening. I am familiar with both the IELTS (Cambridge, UK) and the TOEFL (USA) tests, and have been a test administrator.
I have taught GED and Hi-Set since 2013. I tutored GED/Hi-Set students in all subject areas. Students of mine ranged in age from 16 to 82 years old. I am able to teach someone test content and strategies.
I am an RN with a Bachelor's and a Master's degrees in Nursing.
I have taken numerous math courses--basic mathematics, algebra, geometry, trigonometry--and been very successful as a student in both high school and college. I have taught basic math in the classroom, and tutored students in basic math, algebra, and geometry.
I am familiar with signed numbers, algebraic and exponential
expressions, polynomials, factoring, linear equations, radical and quadratic equations, various graphing, functions, and basic statistics (measures of central tendency, probability). These are typical content areas covered in beginning algebra.
I have tutored SAT and ACT Reading as well as the other subjects of writing and math. I have also taught these subjects in the classroom for GED students, and ESL students.
I have helped students as both a classroom teacher and as a tutor to learn productive study skills. Particularly, as a recent GED/HSE instructor/tutor of reading, writing, math, science and social studies, I routinely assisted students in improving their ability to take succinct notes, complete assignments, and to prepare for exams. I recently assisted high school students to prepare for their SAT and/or ACT exams, pointing out optimal ways to study for the exams.
