About Shang

I have a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and a master's degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Texas. After working in the high-tech industry as an engineer for 30 years, I recently retired. However I would very much like to stay productive, especially in helping students realize their potential and achieve their career goals. My extensive math training, particularly my industry background, will provide my students with a unique experience in understanding and mastering all math subjects. When my two children were in middle/high schools, I tutored them and their friends in different math topics as well as in preparation for SAT/ACT tests. They have since successfully completed college education and moved on with their post-graduate careers. A few years back, I myself started a career move to math teaching. I enrolled in the Colorado Secondary Math Teacher License Program at the Metropolitan State College of Denver and completed several courses in math education. Though time and career constraints kept me from finishing the program in time, I am now much better prepared for teaching/tutoring secondary mathematics.

I specialize in all secondary math subjects including algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus, as well as preparation for standardized tests such as SAT, ACT and GRE.

Math teaching/learning is never a one-size-fits-all process. I will work with each individual student to develop a plan that sets his/her own pace to success in math. I also strongly suggest students' feedback, especially in pointing out the shortcomings in my tutoring so that we can improve and learn together as a team.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I tutored my own two children a few years ago on ACT preparation. They both received very good ACT Math scores of above 30. I strongly believe every student can benefit with adequate preparation for the test and achieve much better scores.

Algebra 1

Basic algebra is the foundation of other more advanced math subjects. In addition one shall benefit tremendously from solid understanding of algebra not only in science and engineering, but also in careers such as business, medicine, finance and arts. My training in basic algebra helped me complete graduate level math classes such as Differential Equations, Numerical Analysis, Biostatistics, Linear Algebra and Abstract Algebra, as well as succeed in a 30 year engineering career.

Algebra 2

I believe everyone can benefit tremendously from solid understanding of algebra not only in science and engineering, but also in careers such as business, medicine, finance and arts. My training in basic algebra helped me complete graduate level math classes such as Differential Equations, Numerical Analysis, Biostatistics, Linear Algebra and Abstract Algebra, as well as succeed in a 30 year engineering career.

Geometry

Geometry is always my favorite math subject. I believe Geometry is a perfect example of why math is truly a visual process. More recently I took Euclidean Geometry class as part of the CO Math Teacher License program at the Metropolitan University of Denver.

Prealgebra

Basic algebra is the foundation of other more advanced math subjects. I strongly believe that every student can benefit greatly with a sound understanding of algebra, setting the stage for later career development.

SAT Math

I tutored my own two children a few years ago on SAT preparation. They both received very good SAT Math scores. I believe every student can benefit with adequate preparation for the test and achieve much better scores.

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is an important part in a solid foundation for more advanced math subjects. It actually was the most widely used and referenced subject for my college training in Electrical Engineering.
